A Film Review of Her Brilliant Career: The Analysis of Women in the Workplace JC Galarde (400188917) McMaster University SOCIOL 2HH3: Sociology of Gender Dr. Samuel November 7, 2022
THE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE 2 Women indisputably are confronted with many more challenges than their male counterparts in every aspect of their lives. This is a consequence of society’s expectations of their physical appearance and the amount of time they put to avoid being judged, but where they face the most discrimination is in the workplace. The gender wage gap is one of the most known issues that is apparent and has been a problem for many years. Women in the workplace have faced many barriers, restricting them from moving up in status, or struggling to fight for equal wages for the same work or justifiable responsibilities for the rate that they are receiving. It has become so extreme that groups and programs are being made to address these problems to teach how to approach them in hopes of change and a fairer environment for all parties involved. The documentary Her Brilliant Career speaks on the issues and analyzes the stories that women have been experiencing and their efforts to extinguish these problems. One main focus of the documentary is the emergence of the Bully Broad program and how it teaches women to tone down their ambitions so that they are more well-received in the workplace. For change to take place, companies need to first abolish different treatment for different genders and be open to promotion for individuals who deserve it through many years of hard work and an overall good relationship with others around them, not by being a male that only has a healthy companionship with the manager who makes the decisions. Society needs to consider everyone as an equal candidate and not pre-emptively judge them as unqualified simply because they are female. As a result of this, the community can move towards a more positive lifestyle for all and begin to offer more possibilities for women to advance in their careers without the worry of being mistreated. A reason to help explain why women have trouble making it to the top and getting promotions is that people are stuck in the traditional ways of thinking where they are sought out to be caregivers and nurturers while males are supposed to be in the working class as
THE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE 3 breadwinners of the family. As stated in the film, it is mentioned that when women get a placement in the same field as men it is seen as “lucky”, almost as if it is impossible for women to be capable of the same duties as men in the workplace (McLaren, 2009). Therefore, when they are seen in the same light as men, employers believe that they are already in a position that best suits their capabilities. To support this claim, it is mentioned in the course that even though women are entering male-dominated majors, they are still more likely to major in arts, humanities, and social sciences (Samuel, 2022). Women entering male-dominated occupations are beginning to increase but are still expected to work jobs in administration and as assistants. This creates a blockade for women to move up in their place of work because the position they already have is the limit of their potential. This can also connect to topics mentioned in lectures where the theory of the glass ceiling is introduced. This is defined by women and other minorities in the workplace that are prevented from moving up by an invisible barrier (Samuel, 2022). With the sudden change of women entering the workforce, there is a need for adaptation. It has been through many years that the expectations of men being the main source of income in a family are starting to alter, and this is due to the outcome of the necessary adjustments that take place. From the perspective of culture, the conventional way of thinking where women require to stay at home needs to shift to where both partners are able to equally balance responsibilities within and outside of the household. Companies have begun to offer parental leave for fathers to take care of their children after birth to allow mothers to return to work. This can assist in extinguishing the expectations that females need to be the ones taking care of their kin, but even within the jobs they take, they cannot escape that reality. Females occupy the majority of the population in the healthcare industry working as nurses and PSWs. This can be the consequence

THE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE 4 of the pressure males have in being aggressive, strong, and bold. If they are seen working these jobs, they can be deduced as being weak or soft, creating a stigma that men should not be working those professions. For women to experience work without discrimination or acts of prejudice, society needs to refuse gender stereotypes and accept individuals who do not fit under the “norm”. Through this, both genders can coexist with one another in their desired field without the concerns of being judged or questioning if they are able to advance into a more prestigious position in the future. In some cases, these people are not aware of the actions taking place, impeding their potential for an increase in their pay. One program that has surfaced to help women address these problems is the Bully Broad program. It is designed to benefit women to get raises and promotions by being more polite on the job. It teaches women to be less authoritative and judgemental and be more collaborative and encouraging because, if they take on the same attitudes as males while on the job, they become more disagreeable with others (McLaren, 2009). The ways in which Bully Broad was successful was by enabling women to be aware of the limitations put on them and how to confront these concerns. Women can assess themselves and learn how to prevent the invisible barriers that exist due to men’s success in becoming management. The contradictions of this workshop are outlined in the course material of the managerial woman which is the argument of Hennig and Jardim that if women behaved like men, they would advance (Samuel, 2022). Bully Broad teaches the contrast and instills into women that if they act less like their male peers, they would be able to receive the respect they deserve. It is clear for one to see that women have encountered significantly more restraints than men in their daily lives. This is due to the pressure to look a certain way in order to be respected
THE ANALYSIS OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE 5 and be spoken to in a professional manner, but where it is the most apparent is within the institutions they work at. Men receive higher pay for the same work that women do, and when it is addressed, they are not compensated. Women experience obstructions in the workplace that limit their ability to be promoted to a higher position and solve the perpetual gender wage gap dispute for the same pay as their male counterparts. These complications have become so severe to the point where support groups and workshops have been created to confront and help individuals generate change for impartiality in the workplace. The film Her Brilliant Career portrays these issues and examines the experiences of women and their attempts for developing a fair environment. The establishment of the Bully Broad program is one of the main ideas of this documentary which educates women to prohibit the adaptation of aggressive habits to become more amiable with their peers. For a transition to take place, businesses require to treat each of their employees the same regardless of their gender and to be open to increasing pay for those who fit the criteria of becoming management. Society needs to eradicate the nature of discriminating against an individual and their capability to move up in their occupations to strive towards a more desired style of living for the betterment of humanity.
