RUNNINGHEAD: ONLINE DATING PROPOSAL 1 ONLINE DATING The current research seeks to understand what characteristics African Americans look for when choosing a mate. As technology advances more and more people are using online tools to find the things that they need including finding a mate. The internet has provided people with opportunities to socialize with individuals they otherwise would not communicate with. Along with the opportunity to communicate with a wider range of people, the internet has also expanded the dating pool significantly. Research has shown that African Americans seek different things when selecting a mate (+ Land & And, 1999). As many people move toward online dating the black community is no different however the black community remains the least chosen group of all the ethnicities both online and off ( Robnett & Feliciano, 2011). The current researchers seek to find out what characteristics African Americans seek when choosing a mate using the dating website format indicated in current dating trends. WEBSITE SETUP The dating website Acorncennections.com is modeled after successful dating websites such as chemistry.com, Eharmony.com, and adventistsmeet.com. The website is setup with all the usual security and privacy features; an anonymous security survey, informed consent, rules and terms of agreement, and preference surveys to ensure to ultimate protection and efficiency to our participants. When the participant clicks the link to join acorn connections they will be taken immediately to the first of two security surveys, the first of which asks them if they are a current Oakwood student if the participant selects yes then they will be pushed through to the second anonymous five item security survey (appendix A).
