Canvas Assignment Two Kandasha Newby 31 January 2021 SWK 3301 Canvas Assignment Two 1) Read the following article, Real World Clinical Blog: Poverty as Trauma, Social Work as Cure 2) Reflect on three things you learned After reading this article I learned that ACES scores that are higher appeared to happen in a cycle with childhood poverty. Childhood poverty usually leaves kids living in an environment that is permeated with persistent stress, and this stress is the result of families living in miserable shortage, which is often hunger, substantial violence, and the constant feelings of intensified panic and fear. I also learned that children who live in constant stress, are more likely to be compromised of their developing mind. Children who live in chronic or chaotic stress will operate primarily from the center of their brains where the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis occurs (Bodenheimer, 2016). Another thing that I learned was that poverty is particularly the most pressing, prolonged health problem and concern facing children in the United States while reading the article, it stated that the number of children living in poor families has increased from 39% in 2008 to 44% in 2014 (Bodenheimer, 2016). 3) How did this article influence you as a future social worker/human services worker? This article influenced me as a future social worker because I want to help relieve people who are suffering through poverty fight for social justice. I want to improve their quality of life of by restoring their capability to function properly in society and their community by improving their problem-solving skills and coping mechanisms. 4) Watch this video about teen drug addiction. 5) Would such a video alert you as a parent to be more aware of your child's behavior? As a parent this video would alert me to be more aware of my child’s behavior because it is very informative with all the statistics that were mentioned and creating awareness about the dangers of substance abuse. In the video it stated that teens have greater access to drugs, high school and college students are more known to abuse drugs. Taking drugs at any age can lead to addiction

that is why it is important for parents to be involved and know what is going on in their child’s life, to prevent drug and alcohol use. 6) As a professional, would you suggest parents watch such a video? As a professional I would suggest parents to watch this video or something similar to it because the use of alcohol and drugs is one of most leading causes to premature death in this world. It is important that parents learn about the major risk factors for drug use and to learn about the consequences of drug use as well. Knowing who your children are friends with will help minimize the chances of your child using drugs because peer pressure is a reason why some kids tend to do drugs or alcohol because they want it “fit in”. Lastly, I would suggest parents to watch this video because learning the signs of drug use in children and knowing how to respond will help reduce the situation. I completed this assignment independently. I did not obtain answers from anyone else, nor did I share my answers with anyone.
