Ontiveros 1 The book ‘Social Problems’ introduces the three major sociological theories: conflict, Functionalist, and Interactionist. The book explains conflict as “a sociological theory that views society as a system in competition and conflict” (Henslin, 2018) ; meaning to avoid social problems coming into connection with the social order of a civilization, strength and control are necessities. Functionalist is explained as “a sociological theory that focuses on how a system consists of interconnected parts, each part contributing in some way to the equilibrium or stability of the system” (Henslin, 2018) , meaning as the critical thinking of a community changes, so too do social viewpoints. Interactionist is explained as “a sociological theory that focuses on the meanings that objects and events have for people and how people use symbols to communicate with one another” (Henslin, 2018) ; meaning the evolving social outlooks are only identified as problems when social interactions become questionable. Of the three theories, I concluded I identify with the Functionalist Theory the most. This is due to the fact of the evolution of critical thinking. While this may not seem an important factor when analyzing society and social problems, it is important to consider history and the changes brought over the years. An evolution of my own critical thinking has taken place over the years in my career in law enforcement, and I believe this sort of evolution of thinking is important to avoid disastrous possibilities in a community.
