SOC 324 Crime and Violence Issue Worksheet 1. Choose a topic. What is your chosen crime or violence issue? Choose from the following list and provide a brief preliminary overview. Your overview will simply be 1–2 sentences describing why this issue is important to you and to society in general. Decriminalization of responsible drug use Intervention on the issue of campus rape Prisons as mental health institutions The topic I have chosen is the Awareness of the use of prisons as mental health institutions. I have chosen this topic stemming from firsthand experience in a prison setting and dealing with severe mental health issues in inmates. This issue is important not only for those incarcerated but also for the staff working the facility. 2. Introduce your social advocacy group. This is an advocacy group of your own creation. In other words, if you were to establish an advocacy group dedicated to the work of your issue, what does that advocacy group look like and what are its ultimate goals (e.g., public awareness, political action, social action, changing laws)? Explain the work the group does related to the topic area. Explain how the social issue aligns with the group’s ultimate goals. Welcome to the Full Moon Advocacy Group! We are a non-profit organization committed to both researching and challenging the uncomfortable and controversial topics that are just as important as those spoken of on CNN or Fox News. The Full Moon name was happily inspired by the many chaotic experiences our original volunteers have gone through; many coincidentally experienced on a full moon. Full Moon’s goal is to help its retinue work through as well as object the issues much of society deems taboo. We believe no conversation should be taboo! We know speaking out is challenging in itself, so we want to help give a space of refuge to explore
underlying issues to help you make informed decisions. How can problems be solved is no one is comfortable or well-informed enough to talk about them? Full Moon let’s you have the right people to articulate any circumstances. 3. Begin research: Provide summaries and citations of some of the sources you are finding related to this topic area. Include two or more sources here. “It’s Time to Bring Back Asylums” explains a unique perspective showing positive outlooks on possible Mental Health Institutions (Oshinsky, 2023) . The documentary ‘Crisis Cops’ is a good resource in learning the positive effect of proper de-escalation techniques and why it’s important for law enforcement. I have also personally heard Joe Smarro’s lecture at the Management & Specialty Training Center (MSTC) in Denver, Colorado (Jenifer McShane) . “Mental Health in Prison and the Catastrophic Effects of Deinstitutionalization” explains an academic outlook on the statistics regarding the lack of resources prisons encompass to take care of severe mental health issues (Mulholland, 2024) .
My own personal experience in working in a prison includes my knowledge of the mental health programs there are and the training in how to help, however, we just don’t have the facility or the numbers to give the true assistance some need. The severe mental health issues would include confirmed chronic schizophrenia and personality disorder (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2024) . Works Cited Federal Bureau of Prisons. (2024, March 13). 4. Preliminary position statement: Explain your position on the social issue as a research assistant for your social advocacy group. Try to refine your position into a clear and succinct position statement that your advocacy group might use on its website or in its materials. This statement is preliminary at this point, and may evolve as you continue your research. Opinions, reports, and demands are constantly spread about training the staff to manage severe mental issues inmates face. While there are already trainings in place for first aid, counseling, mental health, and de-escalation techniques, what many fail to understand is the staff member is outnumbered in the housing unit significantly. A typical housing unit will hold approximately one-hundred and fifty inmates; there will typically be one staff member assigned to watch over all one-hundred and fifty individuals. Should there be an individual who did not get to go to see medical for his prescription refill and should that individual begin having a mental episode of some sort, it is up to the staff member to take care of him/her. That care must come between required moves throughout the day as well as emergency situations, as well one-hundred and forty-nine other inmates needing that staff member’s attention. Due to such irregularity of the severe mental health issues among inmates, there should be specific institutions for those in need of such mental health assistance. 5. Stereotypes: As you work through the research, you will begin to uncover stereotypes related to your issue. What have you discovered thus far? The stereotypes I have encountered view the inmates and a prison setting as something out of a movie, which is especially not the case. My research notes the public views the inmates being left alone to deal with their physical and mental struggles and receiving absolutely no help from staff.
6. Further exploration: What have you come across that you want to find out more about? This section is for notes to yourself about additional research you plan to pursue. I’d like to read more regarding the Worcester Recovery Center in Massachusetts as well as find out if there are more facilities similar to it. I would also like to read more if those opposed to such facilities are only opposed because of history. 7. Questions: Any questions for the instructor about the project or the topic area. (This area is optional.) Note: In many cases, you will write more than the size of the text box provided above, which is fine—use as much space as you need. If you have to go on to additional pages, the boxes will expand automatically as you write more.
