EDC 106 Module Three Assignment (10 points) Part I (6 points) : Implicit Bias Researchers at Harvard have developed over a dozen tests for measuring implicit bias related to race, sexuality, disability, religion, and other forms of bias as part of Project Implicit. Visit the project’s   Take a Test   site at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html and take the tests listed below. After you complete each individual test, reflect on the test itself, your experience taking the test, your results and interpretation of the results. 1. Choose either the Gender-Career or Gender-Science tests and complete it. Reflect on your results here: I chose Gender-Science, my test results stated I have a moderate association for Male with Science and Female with Liberal Arts. I am honestly disappointed with these results because I know how hard women in STEM are working to make their place and I feel like people who assume “science is male” completely count these women out. 2. Choose either the Race or Skin-tone IAT and complete it. Reflect below: I chose Race IAT, my test results are, You were about equally fast at sorting 'Black people' with 'Bad' and 'White people' with 'Good' and at sorting 'White people' with 'Bad' and 'Black people' with 'Good'. I am glad about these test results because I constantly make efforts to educate and make myself a better ally, so it’s reassuring that I have broken generational ways of thinking. 3. Select the Religion IAT and complete it. Reflect below: I chose the religion IAT, my test results were. your responses suggested no automatic preference between Judaism and Christianity. I think these results can be accredited to my best friend being Jewish, so I’ve heard stories and been around many traditions. I truly admire Judaism. 4. Select the Disability, Weight, or Age IAT and complete it. Reflect below: I chose the age IAT, my results were that I have a slight automatic response to young people over old people. I believe these test results reflect my age and ideas. I tend to agree and surround myself with more likeminded individuals, and they tend to be younger so I think I prefer them sometimes. 5. Select the Transgender or Sexuality IAT and complete it. Reflect below: I chose the sexuality IAT, my results stated that I had a moderate automatic preference for Gay people over Straight people. I think this reflects the way I was raised and my family dynamics. I live almost full time with my mom now and her side of the family is very liberal. My sister, aunt, and grandma are also all queer, so I have always associated being queer with the people I love. 6. Choose either the Arab-Muslim, Asian , or Native IAT and complete it. Reflect below: I chose the Arab-Muslim IAT and the results indicated I have a moderate preference for Arab Muslims over Other People. I really don’t understand these results, I do have a deep appreciation for the Muslim culture and religion, but I wouldn’t view myself as someone who prefers someone based only on religion. Part II (4 points): Look Different
View the series of seven short MTV video clips at https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=futSiMyQ1_o&list=PL4bAG9BT-P26od3nP75beTnvhxXMHlzc5&index=2 and then make connections between the videos and this week’s key terms. 1. Define implicit bias. Implicit bias is a type of bias that occurs automatically and unintentionally and effects ones judgment, behaviors and decisions. 2. List two examples of implicit bias from the video clips. “I can’t tell Asians Apart” Coneys that all Asians look similar and places the person who made the comment on a pedestal because they feel superior knowing they are “too cool” to mingle with an Asian student. “What up Bin Laden” is a stereotype used against Muslims and Arab people in an effort to tarnish the name of all Muslims due to the action of one who wasn’t acting in accordance to their faith. 3. Define microaggressions. Microaggressions are defined as verbal or behavioral slights that convey hostile or negative attitudes towards a marginalized group. 4. List two examples of microaggressions from the video clips. “You’re pretty for a dark girl” the addition of for a dark girl not only diminishes the compliment, it puts down all dark women as in saying they don’t fit the beauty standard. “You’re different for a black guy” this is like assuming all white people should behave the same way based on one singular factor, and it pushes a toxic narrative.
