DOUBLE CLICK HERE AND REPLACE WITH YOUR NAME DOUBLE CLICK HERE AND REPLACE WITH NAMES OF ANY COLLABORATORS SOCIOL261 Assignment #2 Due: Friday, March 8 at 11:59 pm ET Practice and demonstrate how we measure and interpret measures of population size and growth, and try your hand at applying a population perspective in thinking about society. Make sure to include your name in the header of this document and in the name of the file you submit. Be sure to show your work whenever and wherever possible and to express/present your answers clearly. Question 1 (11 points total) For this question, you are demonstrating your ability to use quantitative demographic data to calculate, interpret, and communicate information about population composition. Table. Racial/Ethnic Composition of FamHIS Sample Full Sample (persons) Has Had a Family Member Incarcerated (persons) Race/Ethnicity Black, Non-Hispanic 380 336 Hispanic 390 290 Other Race, Non-Hispanic 223 154 White, Non-Hispanic 1667 1211 Total 2660 1991 Source: Professor Yi’s analysis of data from the Family History of Incarceration Survey (FamHIS). a. What proportion of the sample is not Black, Hispanic, or White? b. What proportion of people who experienced family incarceration are Hispanic? c. What proportion of White respondents have not experienced family incarceration? d. In this sample, which racial/ethnic group—Black or White respondents—is more likely to have experienced family incarceration? Be sure to provide support for your conclusion and show any calculations that you conduct to answer this question, if needed. Question 2 (7 points total) This question asks you to combine some of your insights from our discussions of population size and growth with newer understandings of population compositions. For each part, describe the shape of the age-sex population pyramid that would match each scenario. Hint: This is a deep thinking question! Be careful to observe whether the descriptions are talking about past/recent trends or current situations and then think about what the age-sex population pyramid would look like now given that information. Consider working out/articulating your thinking by discussing key population processes. a. For the last 50 years, this country has had extremely low fertility rates and high life expectancies, with these trends continuing. It is considered one of the nations that is at the most advanced stages of the Second Demographic Transition. Describe the age-sex population pyramid for the current population of this country. 1

This country (Country A) has been involved in regional wars for most of the late 20 th (1950s-1990s) and 21 st centuries (2000 onwards), with most of these wars taking place in other countries. As part of Country A’s military strategy, young men have been subjected to mandatory military service for this entire period. The war and the military service requirement are ongoing; although there have been casualties, the volume of young men lost to the war has been inconsistent over the course of this period. Describe the age-sex population pyramid for the current population of this country. Question 3 (15 points total) Tourism to Croatia and revenue from tourism to Croatia have increased steadily in recent years. This is in part due to growing knowledge of Croatia’s beaches, waterfalls, and beautiful natural landscapes as well as concerted efforts from the country’s Tourism Development Strategy as well as membership in the United Nations’ World Tourism Organization’s Sustainable Tourism Observatories program. This assignment came with an Excel workbook called “SOCIOL261_A2.xlsx.” For Question 2, you will need to use this spreadsheet and the Excel skills that we practiced in class. a. Review the information presented in the workbook. Add two new columns, “abs_pop_change” and “crude_growth_rate” to your data set. Use formulas to calculate and fill in the appropriate values for these columns. When complete, your data sheet should have data for the entire period observed (1950-2021) and the following columns of data: i. year: year of observation ii. country: the name of the country iii. abs_pop_change: the magnitude of annual population change in absolute terms iv. crude_growth_rate: the crude annual growth rate in percentage points (not as a proportion/decimal) Use formulas to conduct any calculations necessary to fill in the new columns with the appropriate quantities. Your Excel workbook should show the formulas/calculations you used when you click on the new cells and not just the numbers. Your “answer” for this question is the modified workbook, which you should submit with your application. b. In what year did Croatia experience the largest increase in population size? In what year did Croatia experience the largest absolute change in population size? Did these occur in the same year? Explain, making sure to use information from your calculations in your response. Question 3 (5 points total) UMass Amherst is the flagship campus of the state public university system of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As such, the relationship between the compositions of the state and UMass Amherst student population is of interest. Write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences maximum) describing some aspects of what you see in the data presented in the table below. Hint: Be sure to use terminology of population description and comparison precisely and use evidence to ground your statements in fact. Take note an additional information provided in the table besides just the numbers. Table.
