Influences on cultural expression of gender. This is important to me personally because as a parent I want my child to be happy in who they are. My child was born female. If she came to me as she gets and said being female didn’t feel right to her, I would help her feel comfortable in who she is in any way I can. II. C. Identify the social science principle(s) that apply to your issue. In other words, which principles of social science apply to the issue you selected? (The social science principles of interest in this course are social roles, social norms, social institutions, and beliefs and values.) I feel in our community where I live it is an issue of beliefs and values for many. II. D. Explain how the principle(s) you identified apply to your issue. In other words, how are the social science principle(s) you identified relevant to your issue? We have many largely religious groups in our state that are opposed to people just being who they are. They claim that the Bible tells us if you don’t fit into what we say is right then you are wrong, and I have to change that. Module 4 A. Describe the issue in the social sciences that you have selected to investigate. Why is this issue significant? The issue I have chosen is gender dysphoria in children. Gender dysphoria is a sense of discomfort or confusion that a persons gender identity may not match their biological sex. This has become a large topic of discussion in the last few years. We some people in our country accusing others of “grooming children” in some perverted way. They say things like ”people weren’t like this when I was a kid” which simply is not the case. As with homosexuality it has always existed but now more and more people are not afraid to be who they are and are more open about it. B. Describe at least three social science resources that you could use to investigate the issue you selected. Your sources must be relevant to your issue and must be of an academic nature appropriate for the issue. In your description, consider questions such as: What are the similarities and differences in the content of your sources? What makes them appropriate and relevant for investigating your issue? What was your thought process when you were searching for sources? How did you make choices?
III. A. Based on your investigation, develop a research question related to the issue you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about? III. B. Explain how a social scientist would go about investigating the research question you developed. In other words, what would the next steps be if a social scientist were to continue researching your question? II. A. Identify an audience that would be interested in your issue. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message? Or who could best help in addressing the issue?
