Week 6 Assignment Courtney Morgan SWK 546-83: Foundation Practice II Dr. Neil Caldwell Campbellsville University 08/10/2023
Week 6 Assignment Exercise 10.2 One problem that a family may face is substance use. Substance use is one problem that is going to be seen within family social work. Substance use disorders are known to be associated with a great number of things such as medical, psychiatric, psychological and even spiritual problems (Daley, 2013). Other things where substance use disorders may be associated with are economic, social, family and legal problems (Daley, 2013). All of these things listed can then lead into some significant burdens for those that are in active addiction, their family and others around them (Daley, 2013). Substance use isn’t just a family problem; it can very well be just as much an individual problem. Substance use can be an individual problem due to all the things that they lose in the process of their addiction. Individuals in addiction tend to lose employment, housing, transportation, their children, their families, and sometimes their life. Substance use can be just as much a family problem such as in incidences where children grow up with a family member who abuses drugs. Incidences such as this one is where those children who grow up like this then to more than likely turn to use substances themselves. The family may be resistant to this especially if the family member that was abusing substances was able to get clean. They may say that it isn’t their fault that the current family member dealing with a substance use issue is using. 5 chosen techniques 1.) Problem solving a. What do you view as the biggest problem? b. What difficulties or hassles have you had because of your drug use? 2.) Crisis intervention a. What was going on in your life when you first started using?
Week 6 Assignment b. Have you ever stopped or tried to limit your use? Why? What happened? 3.) Reframing a. Think about a challenging time in your life and ask yourself about a benefit or lesson that you learned from that experience. b. Let’s focus on finding a solution and move away from the negativity. 4.) Metaphor a. Addiction is like a tornado, ravaging everything in its path. After the storm, it’s time to rebuild. It won’t look exactly the way it did before the tornado hit but there’s potential for things to be even better. b. Addiction is a disease of the soul. 5.) Confrontation a. Your words say that you would like to have a better relationship with the family, but your actions say that it’s not a priority for you. b. First you said that her behavior doesn’t bother you, then you said you feel your relationship is not as important to her as it is to you. Resolving an Ethical Dilemma A.) The ethical issue in this case is that the 17-year-old girl was being seen by the school social worker involuntarily. Another ethical issue is that the social worker also didn’t get informed consent from the girl either. B.) As far as the issue of the 17-year-old-girl being seen by the school social worker involuntarily, this falls under NASW Code 1.03- Informed Consent section D. This section here describes someone receiving services involuntarily. When it comes to the issue of the school social worker not getting informed consent form the 17-year-old

Week 6 Assignment girl goes against NASW Code 1.03 section A. This is where she would b explained the purpose of services, risks related to the services and much more. 6 Possible Interventions Parent-child interaction therapy Parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT) is one of the possible interventions that could very well be used with my mock family. PCIT is completed within two different phases. The first phase of PCIT focuses on the parent-child relationship and strengthening that (Urquiza & Timmer, 2012). Then, when it comes to the second phase, it focuses on improving compliance within the child involved (Urquiza & Timmer, 2012). This is one of those forms of interventions where it works a little bit on both, the adult and the child. Play therapy Play therapy is one of the possible interventions that can be used with my mock family with engaging the children to talk more openly. Behaviors that children show during play can depict different themes when it comes to their emotional dynamics ( Alleviation of Children’s Emotional and Behavioural Problems With Play-base. . .: EBSCOhost , n.d.). This can be very helpful for the therapist that is working with them to be able to gain insights when it comes to the mental frame of the child that they are working with ( Alleviation of Children’s Emotional and Behavioural Problems With Play- base. . .: EBSCOhost , n.d.). There are common themes that are seen when it comes to play which are exploratory, relationship-building, power-control, death and loss related, and many more ( Alleviation of Children’s Emotional and Behavioural Problems With Play-base. . .: EBSCOhost , n.d.).
Week 6 Assignment Solution-focused A solution focused approach would be helpful for working with my mock family because it is a way to really engage the family in conversation to incorporate change ( SOLUTION-FOCUSED THERAPEUTIC METHODS.: EBSCOHost , n.d.). This is a way to have a discussion regarding different types of options that they would have to start making changes. This is a form of intervention that helps the family focus on ways in which they can make progress rather than looking merely at the past or negative events in their life ( SOLUTION-FOCUSED THERAPEUTIC METHODS.: EBSCOHost , n.d.). It is a way to have the family focus on the future and where they want to be in the future. This is considered to be one form where the therapist would rarely ever directly challenge or confront the client. No assumptions are made in this form of intervention but more so accepting the clients reality. Task Centered Practice Task centered practice is a model that is used as a short-term, problem-solving approach when it comes to social work. This is where the social worker attempts to do what they can to help create a caring, collaborative relationship with the family ( Research on Task-centered Practice.: EBSCOhost , n.d.). When doing this, the therapist takes information that they gained while doing the assessment with the family and shars that with the family ( Research on Task-centered Practice.: EBSCOhost , n.d.). They do this in order to avoid things such as hidden goals or even hidden agendas ( Research on Task- centered Practice.: EBSCOhost , n.d.).
Week 6 Assignment Motivational Interviewing Motivational interviewing is a good place to start at at times with families. It is a way to be able to learn more about the family that one is working with. In motivational interviewing, this is the opportunity for the social worker to express some sense of empathy, providing warmth, sincerity, optimistic assumptions, and reflective listening ( Motivational Interviewing Approach in Overcoming Drug Addicts Distrust.: EBSCOHost , n.d.). There is also the opportunity for acceptance of ambivalent feelings, emotional appreciation, and directing the view in what one would consider to be a more realistic direction ( Motivational Interviewing Approach in Overcoming Drug Addicts Distrust.: EBSCOHost , n.d.). Parent management training Parent management training (PMT) has been said to produce positive outcomes when it comes to parents and children in clinical trials (Hagen & Ogden, 2016). According to research, the severity of child behaviors and the disadvantages in the family have shown to be positively impacted with parent management training (Hagen & Ogden, 2016). Parent management training was originally designed to help parents implement changes (Hagen & Ogden, 2016). This is said to be done by the increase use of positive teaching ways for pro-social behavior but it by its contingent use of mild negative behaviors (Hagen & Ogden, 2016).
