Wilczynski Text Learning Assignment #2 Sienna Pacheco SPCE 689 Section 810
Chapter 7: Treatment Acceptability and Social Validity This chapter discussed why treatment acceptability is important and how it is critical for social validity. One significant aspect of social validity is treatment acceptability, which entails responding to five questions: “Is the treatment fair? …reasonable? …appropriate? …unintrusive? And would you recommend this treatment for others?” ( Kazdin, 1980, as cited in Wilczynski, 2017). There have been numerous technologies and tools created to evaluate treatment accessibility. The different tools were also created with varying target audiences. The target audience ranges from teachers, parents, and children. There are numerous factors that affect the probability that a treatment will be accepted. Some findings mentioned in this chapter are that treatments that rely on procedures based on positive reinforcement are more acceptable than those that rely on punishment (Wilczynski, 2017). Also, that unless more serious behavior is being addressed, more complex interventions are not as acceptable. Additionally, more time intensive treatments are also viewed as less acceptable. Another variable that influences treatment acceptability is the influence of membership in different cultural groups. According to Miller & Kelley (1992), they found that women find treatment more acceptable when the client demonstrates severe behaviors compared to men. Parent perception of the support from family members could also contribute to the acceptability of treatment. For example, if the parents perceive
strong support from family members, then the acceptability of the treatment increases and vice versa. Pragmatic language may also be a factor in influencing treatments acceptability. When communicating treatment to individuals that are not in the profession, it has been found that using words that are easier to understand can help with increasing acceptability. If the professional speaks in such a way that relies heavily on technical terms that are unknown to the lay person, this might create confusion and discomfort therefore lowering the acceptability. Overall acceptability of treatment is extremely important and knowing ways to measure and strategies to promote acceptability should continue to be emphasized and studied.
