Joey Cook Instructions Worth 10 points. Read the articles from "Freedom's Journal." Then thoroughly answer the following questions. Your answer to each should each be around 3-6 sentences (though more is welcome). Submit your answers through iCollege as a Word or PDF document. As you are answering, make sure to use specific evidence from the readings to back up your answers where possible - like quotes . Make sure to put your quotes in "quotation marks." Format your answers as 1. 2. instead of as an essay. A note on language: While you will see the use of the word "negro" in historical sources, such as these, modern academic discourse does not use this term. We only use it when directly quoting from a primary source. Instead we use "Black" or "African-American" to refer to Americans of African descent. Why? Language changes all this time! In this case, the shift came in the 1960s with the Civil Rights Movement. If you have questions about language, feel free to ask before you submit your work. 1. What do these advertisements (Doc A) suggest about education for African Americans in the 1820s? The advertisements in Doc A suggest that education for African Americans was very poor in the 1820s and that African American literacy was probably very low. We can assume this since between the two advertisements, it is more expensive for a child ( “2 to 4 dollars”) to go to school than an adult (“1 dollar”)(1). This means that most of the black people going to school are escaped or former slaves, not children, which suggests that the general amount of education that black people were getting was insufficient if most people are only getting to learn when they are adults. 2. Considering where this article (Doc B) first appeared, why do you think the editors included it in their newspaper? I think the editors included it to supply evidence that black people had opportunities abroad so long as they could get access to land. The editors even included that they raised productivity in that region from exporting “nothing to 500 or 600 hogsheads” (2). The editors probably wanted to
encourage black people leaving America and creating their own industry, but I think that even they knew that for most black people in America that was inaccessible. 3. Why do you think the editors printed Doc C in their paper? In particular, what was the purpose of the second notice? And why print a notice from Philadelphia? The editors probably printed Doc C to inform freed black people in the north that they needed to stay aware because they could get kidnapped and taken back or sold to the south. The second document openly mentions that the kidnapped were “arrested as runaways,” which was before Scott v Sandford (3). This could be an example of civil disobedience on behalf of the editors if it was fully legal to deport slaves back to the south at that time. 4. Who is Bishop Allen, and why is this article (Doc D) included in the newspaper? Why are benevolent societies necessary in the 1820s? Bishop Allen is the “first person that formed a Religious Society among the People of Colour in the United States of America” (4). This article is included to commemorate his birthday. Benevolent societies play a crucial role in providing support to the community and addressing social issues. 5. According to the editorial (Doc E), what are some challenges faced by African Americas, and what are some ways the newspaper could help the African-American community? The newspaper claims that it “shall ever be our duty to vindicate our brethren, when oppressed, and lay the case before the public” (5-6). Their goal was to make the public aware when the civil rights of black people were under attack. This is not unsimilar from when the Black Panthers used newspapers to help organize bail of victims of racial profiling. 6. After reading these documents, what would you say was the overall purpose of Freedom's Journal ? (Think of what they're publishing and why.) The primary purpose of the journal is to advocate for the African American community by promoting education, economic improvement, and civil rights issues. This was evidenced in multiple documents so far. The editors believe progress is possible and that black people in America do have an opportunity.
