EDC121 – Assignment 1 – Short Essay Caroline Reed 21067840 Short essay 1: The term ‘multiliteracies’ is preferred by some educationalists over the term ‘literacy.’ Explain what ‘multiliteracies’ means and how this differs from traditional ideas of literacy. Literacy has always been a key component of the curriculum, however with advancing technologies and a more globalised society, the term multiliteracies has become critical for teachers to understand and teach in a modern context. This essay will define traditional literacy and multiliteracies and explain the differences between the two terms. Multiliteracies is on its way to becoming the common method of teaching language and communication in the classroom rather than the more traditional approaches of teaching literacy. Sang (2017, p. 16) argues that due to the constant changes of the 21 st century, traditional settings of literacy and literacy education may no longer benefit students working and social lives, especially outside of the classroom. Multiliteracies is defined as “… multimodal rather than language dominant, being made up of multiple literacies and multiple literate practices that continuously evolve as local and global society, culture and technology change the contexts in which literacy is practiced (Michèle Anstey & Geoff Bull, 2018). Essentially multiliteracies adapts to changes in society and that the concept of multiliteracies is not permanent, rather it evolves with the world and can adapt to modern educational settings and teachings. According to the Australian Curriculum literacy is fundamental to a student’s ability to learn at school and to engage productively in society (ACARA, 2016). Whereas if looking at the traditional methods of teaching literacy, it is limited to “paper-based, formalised, and standardised forms of language that only reflects the dominant language and culture (Sang, 2017). Or in other words, literacy in the traditional sense has not changed with society and the teaching methods can be seen as outdated and may not be relevant to a 21 st century student’s language skills. It is clear that definition of multiliteracies is ever changing and adapting with modern society. It is flexible and is likely to be more favoured by 21 st century teachers as a way of educating their students rather than taking the traditionalist approach of teaching literacy. The meaning of multiliteracies is simply an expansion of the term literacy. Literacy traditionally focused on printed and written forms of language. Whereas multiliteracies has expanded on this to include using multiple modes of representation, such as music, gestures, pictures and especially technology to teach literacy (Sang, 2017). This can be demonstrated by looking back twenty years ago. The use of various educational technologies in the classroom did not exist. Teachers educated their students about literacy either by verbally teaching in front of the classroom or asking students to read a physical book and write on paper. In comparison, today the curriculum for literacy has expanded. Teachers now use a number of technology and other modes to teach their students on communication and language. Globalisation is one of the main reasons why literacy expanded to multiliteracies. It has changed the “everyday practices of communication” (Burke et al., 2013). In affect it has caused schools to alter their curriculums to keep up with the “…increased sign systems that have changed what it means to be literate in today's world” (Burke et al., 2013). Burke et al (2013) has made it clear that the rigid structure of teaching traditional methods of literacy would not be able to accommodate these new channels of communication. This implies it is essential for teachers to be confident with the educational practices of multiliteracies as students need to be proficient at reading and designing these multimodal texts in order to be literate in today's world. The evolution from literacy to multiliteracies has developed more sophisticated ways for teachers to educate students’ in communication and language. As technology continues to 1

Short essay 2: Identify why a student may benefit from being taught in such a way in classrooms. In your response, consider how this may support students from different language and social class backgrounds.
