SOC 324 Crime and Violence Issue Worksheet 1. Choose a topic. What is your chosen crime or violence issue? Choose from the following list and provide a brief preliminary overview. Your overview will simply be 1–2 sentences describing why this issue is important to you and to society in general. DecriminalizaAon of responsible drug use IntervenAon on the issue of campus rape Prisons as mental health insAtuAons MilitarizaAon of police InsAtuAonalized racism in a chosen area of the criminal jusAce system Other issue (if approved by instructor) A significant number of incarcerated individuals could potentially derive advantages from alternative forms of punishment instead of being incarcerated, thereby exacerbating issues such as overcrowding, resource scarcity, and mistreatment. The increase in mass incarceration can be attributed to the practice of using prisons as healthcare facilities within our prison system. This topic is significant for society because, as taxpayers, we have a duty to financially support such individuals who have committed offenses.
2. Introduce your social advocacy group. This is an advocacy group of your own creaAon. In other words, if you were to establish an advocacy group dedicated to the work of your issue, what does that advocacy group look like and what are its ulAmate goals (e.g., public awareness, poliAcal acAon, social acAon, changing laws)? Explain the work the group does related to the topic area. Explain how the social issue aligns with the group’s ulAmate goals. A advocacy group I would establish would be one of a mulAdisciplinary team which encompasses field such as mental/behavior health medical help, funding iniAaAves and to seek opAonal treatment for offenders who have been found guilty of minor crimes. This goal of this advocacy group aligns with the ongoing issue of the use of correcAonal facility as mental health issues.
3. Begin research: Provide summaries and citaAons of some of the sources you are finding related to this topic area. Include two or more sources here. “According to the Prison Policy Initiative, over 40% of people in jails and prisons have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder and one in four people in jails are experiencing psychological distress.”Prison Policy Initiative. (2022, October 11). Mental health. Initiative, P. P. (n.d.). Mental Health. Retrieved from https://www.prisonpolicy.org/research/ mental_health/ Research article titled The Relationship Between Community Public Health, Behavioral Health Service Accessibility, and Mass Incarceration," proposes that the separation of community behavioral health and the criminal legal systems leads to a conflicting need to address mass incarceration and increase the availability of services(Ramezani et al., 2022) Ramezani, N., Breno, A., Mackey, B. 4. Preliminary posiAon statement: Explain your posiAon on the social issue as a research assistant for your social advocacy group. Try to refine your posiAon into a clear and succinct posiAon statement that your advocacy group might use on its website or in its materials. This statement is preliminary at this point, and may evolve as you conAnue your research. Our advocacy agencies endeavor to advocate for high-quality healthcare for incarcerated individuals requiring mental health services. A significant number of these individuals are not inherently "bad," but rather require assistance. They may be devoid of familial or social connections or have experienced significant psychological distress that can be identified or alleviated through medical intervention. Our goal is not only to provide assistance, but also to increase awareness about the unconstitutional treatment of these individuals. 5. Stereotypes: As you work through the research, you will begin to uncover stereotypes related to your issue. What have you discovered thus far? A prevalent stereotype regarding this specific matter is the categorization of offenders as inherently negative, yet we fail to consider the complete perspective. Imperfection is inherent in every individual, and certain individuals have endured traumatic experiences from an early stage in life that have a lasting impact on them. Instead of desiring to assist these individuals and fulfill their needs, they are frequently neglected. This particular type of stereotype can have negative consequences because funding for this specific group can be limited. 6. Further exploraAon: What have you come across that you want to find out more about? This secAon is for notes to yourself about addiAonal research you plan to pursue. Following my initial investigation, I am curious to ascertain the underlying cause of these recurring problems. How are individuals who are incarcerated denied access to medical or mental health support? While I acknowledge the existence of medical and mental health services for incarcerated individuals, I question their sufficiency in meeting the needs of this population. I would like to gain a deeper comprehension of why the act of denying medical aid to offenders is persisting, despite it being a violation of one of the ten amendments.
Note: In many cases, you will write more than the size of the text box provided above, which is fine—use as much space as you need. If you have to go on to addi@onal pages, the boxes will expand automa@cally as you write more. 7. QuesAons: Any quesAons for the instructor about the project or the topic area. (This area is opAonal.)
