Module 8 Short Responses – Question 1 Consider the following statement: The support of non-Native Alaskans was an important factor leading to the settlement of Alaska Native land claims . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, I would agree that the support of non-Native Alaskans was important to the overall outcome of the land claims.  Any opposition from either party, the non-Natives or the Natives, would have had serious implications on the outcome.  If the non-Native Alaskans did not support or approve of the provisions put into place for these claims, we would have potentially seen conflicts that would match those seen in the past in the lower states. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 2 Consider the following statement: ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. The land claims and deals were inevitable and I do feel that yes, the ANCSA was a fair settlement.  The AFN went through great lengths to not only protect the present residents of Alaska Natives, but they also did a great deal to protect the future as well.  In addition, this settlement protected land that the Natives already historically used that the land that was in question was that in which was not already in use by the Alaskan people, thus up for grabs in a sense. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 3 Consider the following statement: ANCSA led to economic benefits for white Alaskans as well as for Natives . Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences. Yes, I would agree with this statement as well.  ANCSA led to the creation of the Trans- Alaskan pipeline that did lead to economic benefits for all.  White Alaskans were able to benefit from the oil profits and the Natives were able to benefit from the initial agreement as well as ongoing residual monetary benefits. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 4 For an American Literature course: What skills from this course would you use to develop a brief essay on the significance of Walt Whitman's "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard
Bloom'd," a poem written in the summer of 1865? I would first use active reading skills to read Walt Whitman's poem in order to fully understand the writing.  I would conduct thorough research of that time period and compare and contrast significant events that are referenced in the poem.  I would also research Whitman to get a clear understanding of his position and any bias he may have.  I would create thesis statement based on this information and research and provide evidence throughout the essay that supports the position of the paper. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 5 For a Sociology course: What skills from this course would you use to produce an annotated bibliography for your course research project? I would first need to use my skills on finding acceptable primary and secondary sources for my course research project.  I would use the skills I have learned to evaluate each source to ensure it is one that will benefit my project.  I would also use my skills and knowledge of APA formatting which would include in-text citations as well as a resource page. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 6 For a Business course: What skills from this course would you use to decide between two different investment proposals? I would utilize the skills I have learned in analyzing the information in order to come to a conclusion on which proposal would be more beneficial.  I would use the knowledge I have learned in identifying evidentiary support to back up my decision. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 7 How can history serve as a lens for the rest of the academic program you'll pursue at SNHU? Has this course changed the way you think about what you want to study? Why or why not? Please respond to this question in two to three sentences, using proper grammar. History can serve as a lens for me in the sense that everything we have been able to learn about the past can help pave the way for improvement and growth in our future.  Throughout the rest of my academic journey, there will be many times where I will have to look to the past in order to present information on a project, paper, argument, or discussion.  I believe
what I have learned most that will benefit me is how to look at history and to not just read it, but actively comprehend every aspect that goes along with it.  This course has not necessarily changed what I want to study, but it certainly has changed how I will engage in the study. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 8 What did you learn about one of these topics or historical events that was new or surprising to you? Explain in at least two to three sentences; be sure to use proper grammar. The Cherokee "Trail of Tears" was a topic I originally thought I was going to focus on for my research project.  As a resident of Arizona, I have the fortunate ability to interact with Native Americans, both professionally and personally.  Before learning about the Trail of Tears, my knowledge of what happened to their culture during that time was very naive.  I simply knew that European settlers came to America and took land that Natives were already living on and forced them to live on reservations.  I was not aware of the deceit and entitlement from the American government to get this land they felt they had some significant claim to.  I was shocked and saddened to learn of the methods imposed to get Natives to move and the devastating loss of life to the Native community. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 9 In one paragraph, explain which parts of your historical investigation and analysis were most interesting to you. Which parts were less interesting? Be sure to use proper grammar. The least interesting part of my historical investigation was the search for primary sources.  This is primarily because I found it difficult to find adequate sources, which made that process frustrating.  Once I was able to secure a few, it really did bring the event to light and I found interesting material, although most was handwritten in writing that I found difficult to read.  This challenge may not have been so frustrating had I chosen a more recent topic that could produce more modern methods for the sources. The most interesting, and most useful for me to use moving forward, would be active reading.  For as long as I can remember, I would read to just simply get facts and information on what I was researching.  I did not, however, apply any techniques of active reading that would benefit me in gaining a more robust understanding.  Being able to read something with more intention, asking viable questions along the way, will help me as I complete my degree as well as in my professional life.
