Module 1 Short Responses – Question 1 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? The influx of unskilled Irish immigrants into New York City in the 1840s and early 1850s drives down wages for other workers at the low end of the salary ladder. This scenario is using an economic lens.  The increase of Irish immigrants greatly effected the wages of all the workers in New York at that time and those financial impacts have a direct influence on the economy. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 2 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? In 1908 Aram Pothier, an immigrant from Quebec, is elected governor of Rhode Island with strong support from the Québécois community. The political lens is applied in this example.  The scenario directly involved the governor, who is a political figure. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 3 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? Irish immigrants and first-generation Irish-Americans come to dominate the hierarchy of the American Catholic Church in the late 19th century. In reading this scenario, I can see the religious lens being applied.  The primary information involves how the Irish-Americans planned to dominate the Catholic Church. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 4 In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you think so? Immigration to the United States comes to be seen as a "rite of passage" for young Québécois women in the early 20th century. I find the scenario to apply a cultural lens.  The immigration of this group of people were
seen as a cultural norm at this point of time. Module 1 Short Responses – Question 5 If you had to write a paper on the Lincoln assassination, what would you like to know more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic. As an American, I know of the assassination of President Lincoln; however, that knowledge is very basic in nature.  In an effort to learn more and have a greater understanding of this topic, I have come up with the following research questions: 1. Did the outcome of the Civil War cause the assassination on Lincoln? 2. How did the assassination affect what was already in motion in regard to the rights of African Americans? 3. What differences would be seen in the country if the Civil War had a different outcome?   Module 1 Short Responses – Question 6 If you had to write a paper on Title IX, what would you like to know more about? Create three research questions that would be appropriate for a historical analysis essay, keeping in mind the characteristics of a critical research question. The three questions can be related, or they can address different aspects of the topic. Even though my career is in higher education, this is a topic that I had no prior knowledge of before this course.  My research questions are geared towards learning more about how this came about and the impact seen since. 1. What motivating factors led to the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and the inclusion of Title IX? 2. In what ways did the passing of Title IX influence women's rights overall? 3. How did Title IX change the the outlook for education and workforce for women? Module 1 Short Responses – Question 7 Write a research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through the lens of
political history. In using a political lens, I would like to know more about the government's involvement with the Irish immigration.  I would ask the research question, how did the government respond to the Irish immigration movement to improve the impacted cities? Module 1 Short Responses – Question 8 Write a research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through the lens of economic history. The Irish immigrant experience did affect the economy and we learned about how it had brought down the working wages of others.  I would like to seek out information on any positive impact.  This leads me to the question, what positive influence did Irish immigration have on the status of the economy in New York?
