Chapter 1 Worksheet questions. 10 pts each. Please write a comprehensive response to each question. 1. In Chapter 1 the focus is appreciative reflection. The author discusses seminal work of Schon and Dewey explaining that the focus of their work was on “problems”. What is meant by the author when he states “focusing on deficits (only) is a powerful aspect of oppression? Do you think oppression exists in the workplace in the context the author suggests? a. As the author stated, “Focusing on deficits (only) is a powerful aspect of oppression.” this indicates that oppression does exist in the workplace, which can lead to disempowerment, limiting individuals' potential, or creating a hostile work environment. Workplace oppression can be defined as the maliceful treatment of others through power or authority, which, as stated before, can negatively impact the workplace. Recognizing and addressing issues that seem to lean towards oppression in the workplace is vital to creating a positive workplace culture. 2. In the summary of Chapter 1, the author suggests that you have positive conversations with others and build on the learning of others; you use positive words and questions; you shift from deficit based conversations to strength based conversations; your conversations should bring joy, wellness and positive engagement into all our healthcare work. I (Kim) believe that many workplace conversations are negative. Explain an example of a negative conversation about a work problem/issue. Was the problem solved? Using Appreciative Reflection explain how the conversation could have occurred. In a negative conversation about a work problem/issue a staff member might express dissatisfaction about another staff member to patients. The disagreement stems from the department on who is doing specific roles and responsibilities. The lack of communication and understanding from one staff member can create a hostile environment and have negative conversations all around the workplace. In an Appreciative Reflection, the conversation between co-workers could have a positive dialogue by stating why they are asking the other to do something they can do themselves. A positive dialogue creates more understanding of partnership and clarification on what is expected to be done, and if any help is needed, they can help one another. Appreciative reflection between co-workers creates a solution-orientated dynamic, which will also create a joyous day ahead.
