Evaluation and Termination Essay Types of Evaluation Evaluation is a crucial aspect of social work, involving the creation and implementation of evidence-based procedures, reviewing individual and program goals, and assessing client satisfaction. A successful social worker must identify the best practices for their clients, examining and evaluating relevant research to inform decisions. Several types of evaluation serve different purposes, including developing and supporting evidence-based practice, measuring goal attainment, and assessing client satisfaction. Research- informed practice, often referred to as evidence-based practice, involves competent social workers exploring available research and evaluating it to determine the best practice approaches for their clients (Langer & Leitz, 2015). This approach is based on the best scientific knowledge, making it a crucial aspect of social work. Overall, evaluation helps social workers ensure their practice is based on the best available scientific knowledge. Evidence-based practice influences generalist practice and future research through a feedback loop. Social workers may collect, practice, and gather more evidence, and then conduct further studies based on these results. Practicing workers and researchers often collaborate, with the former researching studies to inform their practice and the latter developing studies based on practitioner results (Gasker, 2019). Client evaluation, which includes evaluating progress and achieving objectives, is an important part of social work that occurs regularly during the implementation process. During a social work interview, progress is frequently evaluated informally. This can include a brief 1
encounter in which the social worker directly monitors the client's progress toward reaching their goals. For an informal evaluation, begin with an opening remark (Gasker, 2019). The Goal Attainment Measure (GAS) is a semi-quantitative method used to assess patients' treatment expectations using SMART criteria. It tracks progress towards recovery- oriented outcomes, necessary for well-being. GAS is modified for depression treatment and improves patient communication and engagement with their providers. It is valuable for both medical and non-medical symptoms, especially for challenging considerations. GAS is particularly useful for physical rehabilitation and mental health issues, as it stimulates patients to work towards treatment goals and engages them more successfully with practitioners, surpassing other evaluation methods. (McCue et al., 2021). Goal Attainment Measure Case Study The Snyders, as potential new parents to Andrea, will face challenges in managing their teenage daughter's emotions. To navigate these obstacles, the Snyders could work on coping strategies to help her feel less anxious and stressed, which can lead to more peace and control over her emotions. They can show curiosity in Andrea’s hobbies and interests, listen actively, and talk openly and honestly. To create a strong family system, the Snyders should focus on clear communication, shared respect, and cooperation. Andrea can have freedom while respecting boundaries and rules given by the Snyders. Andrea could let her parents know how she would prefer to be treated. To achieve this, the family should set objectives such as communication without yelling, no interruptions, and responding respectfully (Nichols & Davis, 2020). A positive outcome would be achieved if tempers are controlled, and positive interactions are maintained among all. Successful Termination 2
A social worker plays a crucial role in the termination process, ensuring a positive and constructive future for both parties involved. This involves initiating discussions about feelings, helping the client plan for follow-up contact, and planning for the aftermath. The social worker should also discuss ending emotions with the client and worker, fostering a sense of gratitude and accomplishment. This process helps clients maintain their positive changes and mature further, leading to a more fulfilling connection. A follow-up evaluation should be conducted to determine the success of termination and offer additional resources if necessary. Factors contributing to successful termination include the client having the necessary skills and resources to manage their problems independently. A social worker should conduct and document follow-ups and confirm the client's situation remains unchanged. Three outcomes can result from follow-ups: gains may be maintained, the worker helps the client plan, success may be ongoing, or the worker may refer the client for service elsewhere (Gasker, 2019). If client success is not sustained, the social worker helps the client recognize what went wrong and decide on future services. 3
