SAMPLE FORMAT MINI-REFLECTION - POLICY BRIEF (Week 7 (h)) Mini-Reflection - Policy Brief: Youth Living in Poverty in San Jose, California 1. The city of San Jose should allocate additional resources to increase social services such as housing assistance, healthcare, and educational support for youth experiencing homelessness and poverty. This can be done by reallocating funds from other programs or increasing taxes to generate additional revenue. The city should develop a comprehensive public awareness campaign to educate the community about available social services for youth experiencing homelessness and poverty. This can help to reduce stigma associated with accessing these services and encourage more youth to seek help when they need it. Lastly, the city should develop job training programs for youth experiencing homelessness and poverty. These programs can help to provide youth with the skills and experience needed to secure employment and become self-sufficient. 2. By highlighting the ways in which institutional racism and other kinds of oppression intersect with poverty and homelessness, critical race theory (CRT) can support the recommendations mentioned above. CRT can offer a framework for comprehending how historical and contemporary policies and practices have influenced the disproportionate number of marginalized communities, especially people of color, who live in poverty and are homeless. The need for policies and programs that address the underlying causes of poverty, such as racial and economic inequality, might be emphasized by CRT in addition to the need to enhance social service funding. This could involve speaking up in favor of laws that deal with discrimination in work, education, and housing as well as encouraging marginalized communities to move up the economic and social ladder. A CRT lens can also ensure that the public awareness campaign is sensitive to cultural differences and takes into account the particular difficulties that various populations have in gaining access to services. To ensure that job training programs are pertinent to and responsive to community needs, CRT can also emphasize the value of incorporating adolescents and other community people in their design and implementation. 3. The revised analysis, which takes into account critical race theory (CRT), challenges several social ideals and precepts that can support measures to combat homelessness and poverty. First and foremost, CRT disproves the notion that individual decisions or failures are the exclusive causes of poverty and homelessness. Instead, CRT places a strong emphasis on how oppression, particularly systemic racism, contributes to and perpetuates poverty and homelessness, particularly in communities of color. This puts into question the notion of individualism and personal accountability and urges a more systematic and community approach to solving these problems. Second, the revised study questions meritocracy's claim that hard work and talent alone lead to success and social standing. CRT shows how race and other social identities affect opportunities and outcomes regardless of effort or skill. This contradicts the idea of a level playing field and requires a closer look at how social processes and structures perpetuate inequality. Finally, the revised analysis questions the idea of a colorblind society, which holds that race should not influence policy or decision-making. CRT addresses this by emphasizing the need of understanding and addressing how racism links with poverty and homelessness. This contradicts the idea that treating everyone equally creates a fair and equitable society and asks for a more intentional and inclusive response to inequality.
