Cultural views and values influence an individual's morals and beliefs. It becomes their basis for the actions and lifestyle they live from day to day. Usually, one's beliefs and values are also seen in their social groups, the ones that have the same values and opinions as them and can be an influence on a person’s decision-making behavior. These beliefs, values, and social interactions can also drive a person into criminal behavior. Deviance is a behavior that a society would consider not within their norm and in most cases, considered an illegal act. This can be from committing murder to simply not following a religious belief. While on is extreme, in some culture’s religion is everything and the violations of those beliefs are seen as deviant. "Cultural deviance theory is a branch of social structure theory that explains crime as a result of learned beliefs that conflict with conventional social norms. The theory argues that people who are exposed to (and influenced by) deviant people, such as peers, family, and neighborhood residents, develop a lower-class culture that sees crime as an appropriate response to strain and social disorganization," (Nickerson, 2023). Culture and geographical location can determine if an act is a criminal act or not. The cultural norm for locations is based on that locations culture, belief, values, and morals. What we consider wrong or illegal in the United States may be seen completely different in the middle east. Our values and beliefs in the United States believe all people should be treated equal no matter of gender, race, etc. Where in the middle east gender is treated completely differently. In some parts of the middle east, it is illegal for a woman to go to school, read a book, or do anything that is consider education on their part.
Broad generalizations have very limited capabilities of explaining behavior. This type of generalization is what creates stereotyping and racial profiling. Broad generalization is basically stereotyping. You are looking at a group as a whole and stating they are all the same. Generalization of a group will prevent theories and data from being developed, and therefore, prevent police and communities from developing programs to help with deviant behavior.
