1 Assignment 3 Kelsie A. Hilbert University of Maryland Global Campus CCJS 342 6381 Crime Scene Investigation Professor Jessica Young July 10, 2022
2 Scenario A scenario in which a crime scene investigator may have a conflict of interest in recovering evidence from a scene would be if anyone they know or family was involved. Whether the person they know is the victim, suspect or witness, the investigator would have a conflict of interest handling any of the evidence and it could possibly get thrown out in court. A conflict of interest is when an individual's personal interests ; family, friendships, financial, or social factors could cloud their judgment, decisions, or actions (Understanding Conflict of Interest, n.d.). Besides removing themself from the scene the investigator could handle the conflict of interest by not handling any of the evidence or interviewing any of the potential people involved. By not handling any of the evidence or interviewing any of the involved parties, the prosecution cannot say there was a conflict of interest or that the investigator played favorites or even messed with the investigation in any way. Crime News Story When crimes get into the media, the coverage impacts them in many ways and usually for the negative. A major news story that was affected by media coverage was the murder of George Floyd in May of 2020. As soon as the incident occurred all media outlets including social media, tv, newspapers and even podcast picked up on the story. The reason it got picked up by so many and so fast was because it was a black man killed by four police officers. This also ignited the Black Lives Matter movement (Folkenflik, 2021). Before the trial even started the police offers were guilty because of the media coverage. The media played over and over again the video coverage of George Floyd telling police officer Derek Chauvin, “ I can’t breathe” while Chauvin’s knee is on Floyd’s neck. The media coverage was positive for the Black Lives Matter movement because it raised awareness and gave them a platform to speak on. On the other hand
3 the media coverage was negative for the police department who was in charge of the case. It made their department look negligent and like they had incompetent police officers (George Floyd, the BLM and Their Impact on the Media: An Overview of MDI’s Coverage - Media Diversity Institute, 2021). Social Media Coverage There are many potential impacts of social media coverage of a crime scene. When social media picks up cases they can go viral and have witnesses coming forward that may have never spoken up before. Law enforcement is getting up to speed and using social media in a professional way to supplement the hands on first person investigative methods. Social media helps law enforcement receive information they may have not discovered, as well at new witnesses. Simply put social media means more ears and eyes to use on an investigation when used the way it is supposed to be (Webster, 2017). Crime Scene investigators need to be open to the use of social media and open to all the information that is going to be coming in. In a 2014 study 73% believe using social media helps solve crimes faster which is up six percent from 2012. In the study more than 34% of people now notify the public of crimes via social media, up 11% from 2012. They notify the public with urgent, real time information and ask them to be on the lookout for certain criminal suspects, their cars and other identifying details. Law enforcement personnel increasingly reach out to the public via social media for help in solving crimes, with 29% soliciting crime tips. The importance of social media in helping solve crimes more rapidly and supporting in crime anticipation is increasing (Social Media Use in Law Enforcement, 2014).
