Diversity and Ethics Statement To: Chair, Diversity and Ethics Committee From: Courtney Gray Date: January 28, 2024 Subject: Statement to the Diversity and Ethics Committee Part 1: Background and Perspective In the first paragraph in this section, describe how your background and ability to apply a sociological perspective would be a valuable addition to the team. In the second paragraph in this section, discuss an example of a time when you intentionally looked at diverse perspectives in order to make an ethical and appropriate decision. My experience and distinct viewpoint would provide significant value to the team in a variety of ways. My social awareness abilities enable me to establish solid, reliable professional relationships with individuals from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. In my prior role, I collaborated with colleagues from all around the country. I’ve learned a lot about different cultures and how to communicate with them politely thanks to this. For instance, my Canadian teammates are direct and enjoy getting right to the point. On the other hand, my colleagues in the southern states are much friendlier and want to strike up a chat before diving into business matters. My ability to adapt to many cultures and the diversity they offer allows me to operate efficiently and improve productivity across multiple teams. I worked on a strategy team to find a solution to keep our company operating during the COVID-19 pandemic without having to lay off employees. This was a very challenging plan to develop because of the various impacts that COVID-19 had on the entire nation. I purposely invited a representative from each department that our business collaborates with on the strategy team so that we could develop a solution that would benefit our whole workforce rather than just
a select few. I wanted to make sure that someone was speaking for each person. I was able to identify what would be advantageous to everyone and plan for the adjustments that needed to be made.
Part 2: Scenario Response Review the scenario described in the assessment preparation. Then, write two paragraphs with the content described below. In the first paragraph in this section, explain how you would approach the scenario using diverse and ethical perspectives. Use specific examples from the scenario and your professional or personal life to support your explanation. In the second paragraph in this section, explain why it is important to consider diverse and ethical perspectives in this situation. Discuss how you would you raise awareness and communicate this importance to others at Herringbone University in your role on the Diversity and Ethics Committee. To address the issues of the institution only permitting one missing class every semester, I would start by paying attention to the worries expressed by the ladies over the regulation. It’s critical to comprehend the three women’s concerns and why, in light of their circumstances, they believe the policy is not just unfair but also unreasonable. Living in the university’s upper- middle-class area makes it easy for someone to conclude that someone is lazy and that's why they’re missing multiple classes. It is evident, nevertheless, that their work ethic is unrelated to their concerns once you take the time to listen to them and get their viewpoint. The lack of access to reasonably priced childcare and the luxury of having at least one parent stay at home with the kids. I would first listen to the women’s concerns and then stay at home with the kids. I would first listen to the women’s concerns and then look into the numbers to see how many pupils’ single moms are who reside in lower-class areas. This will allow me to determine the precise number of students that are negatively impacted by this policy. After that, I would look at the various measures the university may take to assist students in need or make policy recommendations. Given that neither of the two students have the same lifestyle, it is critical to consider a variety of moral viewpoints in this case. Living in the high middle-class neighborhood where

Herringbone University is situated may relieve students of the burden of finding child care. This can be the case because they can afford the cost of childcare or employing a nanny. Thus, these expenses are not a concern for them. Alternatively, it is possible that their spouse can stay at home with the kids while they go to school. For a student who is a single parent who is trying to make ends meet but is attending school to increase their chances of landing a better-paid job, this is very different. The backgrounds of the kids that attend the same classes range greatly, and the school’s rules must acknowledge and value this diversity. Accurate data collection is one method to bring attention to this variety and show people just how diverse the backgrounds of students are. Organizing a few staff training sessions would be the most effective strategy to raise awareness of this variety among university workers. Staff members are more likely to comprehend how and why the implemented regulation may be unjust and unreasonable for their kids if they receive proper training. This would strengthen the teachers’ compassion for their students and help win support for revising the policy .
