2 Annotated Bibliography Rich, A. J., DiGregorio, N., & Strassle, C. (2021). Trauma-informed care in the context of intellectual and developmental disability services: Perceptions of service providers . Journal of Intellectual Disabiliti es , 25(4), 603–618. https://doi.org/10.1177/1744629520918086 Rich et al. (2021) discuss the concepts of trauma, and trauma-informed care (TIC), in individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Individuals with IDD are a vulnerable population and are more likely to experience initial and repeated trauma (Rich et al., 2021). The authors of this research focused on the perceptions and knowledge about TIC from staff that provide services to IDD individuals (Rich et al., 2021). Using a theoretical framework incorporating resiliency and ecological systems theories, the authors developed an anonymous survey sent via email to IDD service providers listed in a regional database (Rich et al., 2021). Open-ended and demographic questions were used to establish categories and concepts related to the survey (Rich et al., 2021). Likert scales were used that allowed study participants to grade their performance, knowledge, and training relating to providing TIC (Rich et al., 2021). Data analysis showed a discrepancy on the integration of TIC into an organization and the organization’s actual performance of TIC related activities; while leaders of organizations might state that they were highly confident that service providers were providing TIC, answers on other questions, or other participants, do not show agree (Rich et al., 2021). Barriers, such as funding for training and limited training options, were also assessed in the research (Rich et al., 2021). The focus of this research is largely related to a specific, highly specialized group of human service workers. As such, it might be difficult to apply this research to other areas of human services (Rich et al., 2021). This research was conducted anonymously, limiting the
3 possibility for follow-up questions (Rich et al., 2021). Beyond that, I feel the findings of this study could provide some guidance to IDD professionals on incorporating TIC to be helpful (Rich et al., 2021). Given the discrepancies between leadership engagement and the actual incorporation of TIC in the organization, more research will help discuss what caused the disparity and help to rectify the situation (Rich et al., 2021). I was interested when I saw this research. I hope to do my dissertation on the experience of nurses providing TIC. This survey could likely be revised for other medical professionals also liked the use of quantitatively, This study gave me some ideas that I might not think of.
