Speak up if you want to bring change to the world.— Dr. DaShanne Spokes, U.S. author, progressive activist, and Native American rights advocate. Often, trauma survivors lack the words to express their grief and fear. Social workers recognize the need and are the first to respond. They are the ones who can speak hope into the hearts of the hurting. In this essay, I will explain how through my experiences as a teacher and my coursework in psychology and sociology, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges many individuals and families face, particularly marginalized and oppressed. This understanding has inspired me to pursue a career in social work, where I hope to use my skills and knowledge to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Specifically, my experiences as a teacher have given me valuable insights into the needs of children and families. At the same time, my coursework has provided me with a strong foundation in human behavior, social systems, and research methods. As a social worker, I hope to provide support, resources, and advocacy to those struggling and work toward a more just and equitable society. As a teacher who has worked with children from diverse backgrounds, I have seen firsthand the impact that poverty and inequality can have on families. I have watched as some of my students come to school without necessities like clean clothes and food, and I have felt frustrated by the limited resources available to help them. I am excited to apply to the Master of Social Work program at Howard University. This program's focus on social justice and community engagement aligns with my values and interests, and I am eager to learn more about how I can make a difference in the lives of struggling people. I still remember the day when one of my students had an accident and didn't have clean clothes in her backpack. When I asked her why she had dirty clothes in her bag, she stated that her mom's washer and dryer were broken, and she didn't have enough to pay for another. I was heartbroken to hear this and knew I had to

do something to help. That's when I realized I wanted to pursue a career in social work. I want to be able to provide support and resources to families like hers and to work towards creating a more equitable society where no child must go without necessities like clothes. My experiences as a teacher have given me a unique perspective on many families' challenges. I have worked with children from low-income households who have experienced trauma and abuse and struggled with mental health issues. Through these experiences, I have developed a deep empathy for others and a strong desire to help those struggling. As a teacher, I have also developed a range of skills that will be transferable to my work in social work, including communication, problem-solving, and the ability to work collaboratively with others. These skills will be invaluable as I work to provide support and resources to families in need. In addition to my teaching experiences, I have completed coursework in psychology, sociology, and human development. These classes have given me a deeper understanding of the social, emotional, and psychological factors that can impact a person's well-being and have helped me to develop a more holistic approach to supporting individuals and families in need. I have also completed several internships and volunteer positions, including working at a local homeless shelter and tutoring children from low-income families. Through these experiences, I have gained valuable skills in crisis intervention, case management, and advocacy and have seen firsthand the impact social workers can have on the lives of those they serve. As an undergraduate, I completed several courses that have prepared me for a career in social work. One of the most influential classes I took was Introduction to Psychology, which gave me a broad understanding of human behavior and the factors that shape it. I also took several courses in sociology, including Social Inequality and Race and Ethnic Relations, which helped me to develop a deeper understanding of the social, economic, and political systems that

contribute to inequality and oppression. In addition, I completed several research projects and papers, including a study on the effects of poverty on child development and an essay on the history of the civil rights movement. These experiences helped me to develop intense research and analytical skills, which I believe will be valuable in my work as a social worker. In conclusion, my experiences as a teacher have inspired me to pursue a career in social work. Through my work with children and families, I have seen firsthand the challenges many people face, and I am committed to using my skills and knowledge to make a positive difference in the lives of others. My coursework in psychology and sociology has prepared me well for this career path, as it has given me a deeper understanding of human behavior and the social, economic, and political systems that contribute to inequality and oppression. Additionally, the research projects and papers I completed during my undergraduate studies helped me to develop vital research and analytical skills, which I believe will be valuable in my work as a social worker. As a social worker, I hope to provide support, resources, and advocacy to those struggling and work toward a more just and equitable society. I am excited to embark on this new journey and look forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead.
