Report
Question 1 Incidence of crime and delinquency that go undetected by police are known as: associated trends. demographic trends. dark figures. solved cases. Question 2 The Uniform Crime Report gives information on: The number of crimes which have been committed in a given year The number of criminals who have been convicted of crime in a given year All crime and delinquency nationwide Crimes known to the police, arrests made, and persons arrested Question 3 What is one of the major reasons there is often significant variation in the crime rates reported under the UCR compared to the NCVS collection programs? Your Answer One of the major reasons there is significant variation in the crime rates reported under the UCR compared to the NCVS collection programs is because the UCR only reports crimes that were reported to law enforcement. The NCVS is able to give us data on reported and unreported crimes and they are able to do this by conducting surveys in households. This is why there is a difference between the two as far as crimes rates are concerned, because NCVS has more data to work with. Question 4 Explain Social Control theory and how it attempts to explain the causes of crime. Next, explain the societal bonds of social control, and the theorist responsible for this theory. Finally, include an example for each of the social bonds. Social Control Theory may be used interchangeably with Social Bond Theory . Your Answer Thomas Hobbs' originating Social Control theory is the belief that people are all capable and motivated to commit crime but the cost socially (shame) keeps most people from crossing
that line. This is where family, friends, and ones surroundings come into play. This theory attempts to explain that if one is surrounded by people who commit crime, that person is likely to commit a crime as well because they are not afraid to be rejected by his/her peers. Travis Hirschi's social control theory was based on the social bonds of attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief. An example of attachment is one person's attachment to their parents because according to this theory one who has a healthy relationship with their parents are likely to not commit a crime. An example of commitment is one's commitment to there goals. If one has a commitment to become a police officer then getting in trouble with the law would not be in that person's best interest. An example of Involvement is one's involvement in extra activities such as sports or homework. According to the Social Control theory, if one is committed to these things, they are unable to commit crimes. An example of beliefs might be someone's religious beliefs. If one were to be a Christian, then committing a crime would be a sin and they would be unable to commit said crime. Question 5 The term “justice” has been used in everything from television commercials to presidential speeches. Despite its frequent use, the word “justice” is a hard term to define. Write a multi-paragraph response based on the following questions: Why is the word so difficult to pinpoint? What does justice mean to you? Locate a story or case to support your opinion, including your source. Your Answer Why is the word so difficult to pinpoint? The word "Justice" is hard to define because there are many factors that play into this word. For one, the term "justice" can be very subjective. Every person may have a different opinion on what justice is, based on there own experience, perspective, and/or personal beliefs. There is also many theories out there that have their own principles or definitions to consider. Utilitarianism for example, is the belief that as long as something benefits the majority, than it is the right thing to do. Whereas deontological ethics is a belief that something is right because the action is morally good not because the outcome is good. What does Justice mean to you? Justice is the moral ground in which every person gets “what's coming to them” from the legal system based on their rights. The punishment for a crime committed should be based on what amount of damage was caused instead of the intent of the person who caused it.
The purpose of this punishment is to deter someone who receives a punishment from re-offending. Locate a story or case to support your opinion, including your source. One very popular topic is the case of Gypsy Rose. Gypsy was lied to by her mother her whole life. Her mom convinced her and everyone around her that Gypsy was sick and could not live a normal life. Gypsy was mentally and physically abused by her mother up until the point that Gypsy realized she was in fact, not sick. Gypsy came up with a plan with her then boyfriend to kill her mom. She believed there was no other way to escape her abuse. After Gypsy and her boyfriend Nicholas killed her mother, she was charged with second degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. This punishment was based on the crime committed, not based on the intent. Gypsy's intent was to escape her mothers abuse. However, just because the intent was wholesome and maybe just, the crime itself was wrong and needed to be punished according to the law. Salam, M. (2024, January 25).
