Criminal Justice Reform “Unlike prisons, psychiatric institutions can be entered voluntarily, and people often turn to them in pursuit of treatment. But when used involuntarily as prison replacements, hospitals mimic persons in eerie ways— and the most oppressed people experience the brunt of the trauma and violence”(Schenwar et al., 2021). Criminal justice reform is essential to create a fairer and more effective system for everyone involved. Criminal justice reform will bring fresh air by bringing much-needed change to a system that has been crying for change for years. It is about creating a fairer, more equitable, and more effective system that benefits everyone involved. Criminal justice reform is like a superhero for the justice system. We are talking about reducing recidivism rates, addressing racial disparities, and finding alternatives to incarceration that work. So, this paper will dive deep into the pressing issues that demand change. Our thesis statement is that the criminal justice system needs to be reformed to boost public safety, slash skyrocketing incarceration costs, and improve the system. Reforming the criminal justice system is crucial for enhancing public safety. By implementing evidence-based practices, such as rehabilitation programs and alternatives to incarceration, we can address the root causes of crime and reduce recidivism rates. Also, it is time to make communities safer by implementing innovative criminal justice that reduces crime, supports law enforcement, addresses social injustice, and holds individuals accountable for violating the law(2023). This approach not only promotes a safer society but also provides individuals with the support they need to reintegrate into their communities successfully. It is all about finding practical solutions when discussing reforming the criminal justice system to boost public safety. One way to achieve this is by focusing on rehabilitation and reintegration. By

Criminal Justice Reform providing access to education, job training, and mental health services for individuals in the justice system, we can help them turn their lives around and reduce the likelihood of reoffending. This not only benefits the individuals themselves but also contributes to a safer society. Another critical aspect of criminal justice reform to enhance public safety is promoting community policing. Trust and cooperation can be built by fostering positive relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. This collaborative approach helps to prevent crime, identify and address underlying issues, and create a safer environment for everyone. Additionally, implementing restorative justice practices, such as mediation and victim- offender dialogue, can provide healing and resolution while reducing the chances of future harm. Together, these reforms contribute to a safer and more harmonious society. Investing in community-based programs and resources can address the root causes of crime and provide individuals with the support they need to thrive. This includes initiatives like job training, affordable housing, and mental health services. Focusing on prevention and rehabilitation rather than solely punishment can create a safer and more inclusive society for everyone. Together, we can make a positive impact on public safety! According to the scholarly article, the cost of incarceration is cited as a staggering $80 billion annually, including the expenses related to incarcerated individuals and the impact on their families, children, and communities. Interestingly, incarceration generates an additional ten dollars in social costs for every dollar spent on corrections costs. The scale of incarceration in the United States over the past 40 years has been unprecedented, with the prison population growing sevenfold and the U.S. becoming the world leader in incarceration. (Epperson & Pettus-Davis, 2015; Pew Center on the States, 2008).

Criminal Justice Reform The National Council on the administration of justice will help reduce delays, backlogs, and prison overcrowding. It aims to coordinate and supervise the criminal justice system throughout the country. The Judicial Service Commission has introduced measures to improve the system under this council. Chief Justice Malaba emphasized the need for practices and policies that respond to people's needs and ensure swift justice. Stakeholders must work together to address backlogs, delays, and trial scheduling issues. They can be resolved effectively by bringing challenges to the council's attention. He emphasized the need to handle matters promptly and in accordance with the law. Each stakeholder's independence and role will be respected. Chief Justice Malaba also highlighted the benefits of a coordinated criminal justice system, such as improved communication, cooperation, and decision-making. This approach will lead to a better understanding of the system's challenges and facilitate their resolution. Building trust in the criminal justice sector requires collective responsibility. The national council consists of key decision-makers from various institutions. Judge President Mary Dube chairs the council, with the Prosecutor-General as the deputy chairperson. Other members include heads of courts, the Anti-Corruption Commission chairperson, government officials, and law enforcement representatives ( 2023, February 17). In conclusion, criminal justice reform is essential to enhance public safety, reduce the soaring costs of incarceration, and enhance the system's overall efficiency. Implementing reforms can create a more balanced and practical approach focusing on rehabilitation and prevention rather than solely punishment. This will benefit individuals within the system and contribute to safer communities and a more sustainable criminal justice system. We must continue to advocate for and implement reforms prioritizing fairness, efficiency, and the well-
