History serves as a lens for the rest of my academic program as well as future career endeavors because it will allow me to approach everything with more of an open mind. The "lens" serve as different perspectives in how an event or idea is looked at which can be very helpful in innovated thinking. I will say, I am not a huge fan of history. I know that it is important to identify how we have evolved and learn from mistakes we have made, however, at the same time, I feel like we don't often learn from history and we as a country continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. Additionally, I feel like how we address history contributes to the loss of its meaning/value as different perspectives form different radicalizations of what went on and it can create more tension in society now. Although it is history, it still today creates societal divides and ongoing stereotypes that impact our functioning today. With that said, one thing I learned about during this course that I was unfamiliar with and surprised by was the implementation of the busing system in Boston. I didn't realize this was made law and forced upon citizens by the government. I knew that it was negatively received, however I didn't realize that school funding was threatened for noncompliance. Module 8 Short Responses – Question 9 In one paragraph, explain which parts of your historical investigation and analysis were most interesting to you. Which parts were less interesting? Be sure to use proper grammar. My all-time favorite movie is Goodfellas, so it's safe to say that I have always been fascinated by the mafia and organized crime. Working in the behavioral health field and pursuing my degree in healthcare administration, I also have a lot of interest in substance abuse and mental health as I see daily how it impacts the patients we serve. Investigating Prohibition and organized crime peeked my interest because I have always wondered if the war on drugs would be more prevalent or less prevalent if drugs were condoned. For example, Canada has "safe houses" for opiate addicts where addicts can go, be provided with heroin and clean paraphernalia to use, and there are medical staff on site in the event of an overdose or medical emergency as well as case managers available to help connect the user with treatment should they be interested. The research on these safe houses show a 100% decrease in overdose deaths in Canada as well as an 85% decrease in petty crimes (typically crimes committed to obtain funds for drugs). This made me interested in looking at how Prohibition impacted crime in the 20's-30's as the intent was to decrease crime and substance use. It was interesting to me that Prohibition had the complete opposite effect on crime then intended.
