ENC 1102 Reflection Activity 2 Answer the following questions about your experience learning about Writing in the Social Sciences. The more you explore answers to these questions, the better. Objective Analysis 1. What did you learn and what did you do that contributed to learning during this unit? (This should be pretty straightforward and objective.) I learned about the process of writing a literature review and also the proper format of a literature review through APA. Reflective Analysis 2. How did you feel at each step along the way--at the beginning of the unit, after practicing annotation and synthesis, after practicing using sources, after gathering and reading your sources for the paper, after annotating your sources, after writing the draft for peer review, after peer review, and after submitting the final version? (Later, consider adding here how you felt after reading your feedback on the final version.) Initially, I was not confident about writing literature review. Of all the different types of papers, I dislike literature reviews the most. However, I felt more comfortable after reading the lessons and through the many practices assigned. I liked practicing using sources as I felt more comfortable using more sources in the review. While writing the draft, I felt uneasy because I forgot one key aspect of using APA, citations are more like paraphrasing instead of direct quotes. I used a lot of direct quotes in my first draft, and I received critiques for that which I really appreciate. After submitting the final version, I felt as though I accomplished the task assigned. 3. Which activities or ideas in this unit were you most confident about? Least confident? I was confident about practicing annotation and synthesis but felt least confident about paraphrasing sources. 4. What was the most enjoyable part of the unit? What was the most challenging? The most enjoyable part of the unit was the peer review, and the most challenging was finding more than 8 sources. 5. What differences did you discover between writing in the social sciences and writing in the humanities? Why do you think those differences exist? What about similarities? Interpretive Analysis. One of the most apparent differences is the formality of the two writing. For social writing, it make sense to provided opinions and use the evidence to back up your thoughts, whereas in Literature review, it is more facts based and opinions are really appropriate for this type of writing. These differences exist because of the audiences of the writings and the prupose behind writing the literature. 6. Look at the objectives listed on the unit page. Copy them here adding your interpretation of whether or not you accomplished these objectives (or how much you have achieved) and why.
1. Perform library and database research using the University of Florida's libraries. Being able to successfully search through different databases and find the sources needed for the review. I think I did a pretty good job as I used more than 8 scholarly sources founded by the Uf library. 2. Distinguish between academic and popular sources. I was able to make a key distinguish between academic and popular sources. Although at times, it felt like using popular sources is easier as they are more accessible. 3. Develop a research plan. I created a plan for this Lit. Review, and I followed it, which made this process easier than I thought it would have been, 4. Produce a critical preface and a formatted bibliography. I used the examples shown in the book as well as Purdue to create an APA formatted bibliography. 5. Use appropriate APA citations. I struggled with this at first, but I was able to get the idea of paraphrasing rather than direct quotes in my brain. But I see how using the APA citations can convey more of a formal format appropriate for Lit. Review. 7. Now that you’ve been through the whole unit, what would you do differently if you were back at the beginning? If I were to do this differently, I would change by topics to focus more on how the media is influenced fandoms. 8. How are you going to use this new knowledge in the future I will use this knowledge to successfully use and synthesize sources for research and more formal writing.
