Social work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal (Kirst-Ashman 3). The social work profession is multifaceted and requires immense amounts of education, time, and training. A satisfactory way of practicing social work is by using a theoretical situation or case study. A case study is a comprehensive look into an individual situation. Using the case study provided by the teacher, an analysis can be completed by answering the ten questions that were also provided along with the case study. The person-in-environment (PIE) approach/theory is an approach/theory that is used in the social work profession that states that a person is heavily influenced by their environment (Rollo 1). After reviewing the case study, there are some things that are concerning during the initial visit. One, all of the children slept together in one bedroom, so it was very cramped there. Two, there was a strong smell of alcohol in the house. Three, Bertha, Bob’s Mother, has early onset dementia. Four, the neighborhood that they live in has “sketchy” houses around them. Four, there was tension between Bob and Carol. Five, the children have little supervision because they are mostly with their grandmother. Six, the house seemed cramped and hazardous. Seven, there was a smell that smells like cannabis. Seven, Bob seems extremely stressed by things that are going on with work. Eight, Bertha seemed to look disheveled and looked like she had not

Lawrence 2 showered in a while. Nine, there was trash overflowing from the trash can and dirty dishes filled the sink. Finally, there was not very much food in the fridge or pantry. There are interventions that can be taken for these issues. For problem five, two interventions that could take place are hiring someone or finding someone to volunteer to watch the children or a boy’s and girl’s club, and have the parents monitor how much time they spend away from their children. For problem four, have Bob and Carol attend a group therapy session or individual therapy session with a counselor to talk about their issues and have Bob and Carol arrange a meeting with their pastor to discuss their marital troubles. For problem two, interview the family to see who is drinking and get them involved with a group like Alcohol Anonymous and/or a rehabilitation program if they have an addiction. For problem three, with permission from Bob or Bertha, have Bertha placed into a nursing home or have someone monitoring Bertha while she is alone or in the presence of a minor. For problem ten, have the family, if they are willing to, apply to SNAP or connect the family to a local church or shelter that has a food pantry. One of the client-systems, Roscoe, is having trouble in school. He has been suspected of selling cannabis on school grounds. This has caused DHS to get involved. When Roscoe was interviewed about his issues, three solutions came up. Roscoe, albeit hesitantly, admitted to selling cannabis at school. The first solution that came up was Roscoe removing himself from his current friend group. The second solution was for Roscoe to join the local YMCA for recreational activities after school. The third solution was for Roscoe to volunteer/work at his church during his spare time. Along with Roscoe, his family became one client system and six unique, individual client systems. There are three important roles that a social worker could take up with this family. First, the social worker could take up the role of a mediator. Second, the

Lawrence 3 social worker could take up the role of broker. Third, the social worker takes up the role of case manager in this case study. As previously mentioned, social work is a multifaceted profession. This profession contains standards for interacting with different client systems. When interacting with an individual, group, community, or organization, it is important to take into account their personal attributes. The Tests, in this case, need to be taken care of in a way that suits their beliefs and traditions. The Tests are a hispanic family that are devout catholics. The family ranges in ages. The family is in the working class. The important things that need to be focused on when working this family as a client system is their ethnicity, religion, and social class. Hispanic families tend to live in mutli-generational households, so the Test’s may feel a little hesitant about specific treatment plans like placing Bertha in a nursing home. Another thing that should be in consideration is their religion. The Test’s are catholic, so they should have a treatment plan that aligns or feels comfortable with their religion. With that being said, the priority of the family is Bertha. As previously mentioned, Bertha was recently diagnosed with dementia. Taking care of Bertha seems to be a task that Bob and Carol have not yet focused on yet. As her disease progresses, Bertha will become more and more of a hazard. A circumstance with Bertha that would be called a crisis is if she does something that puts herself or Sophie in harm’s way. Many ethical issues can come up when working a case. Provided in the case example, You find out that Roscoe knows your daughter and they may have had a relationship at some point. This situation is an ethical dilemma. An ethical dilemma is defined by the Code of Ethics . The ethical dilemma in question here is one that involves privacy and confidentiality. There are potential risks of the daughter leaking information or asking about private information about Roscoe’s case. Along with Roscoe, Bertha also poses an ethical dilemma with her watching the

Lawrence 4 14-month old baby. She has a referral for services dilemma. As the case manager of the entire family, you would be swamped in work, so it would be hard to help Bertha. Drawing up all of the information that needs to be given to a service provider like a nursing home could be forgotten by the social worker. A way to circumnavigate this is by employing the ethical-decision making process. This process involves many steps. First, you must look at the facts, stakeholders, and distinguish the decision makers. Second, you must look at alternative actions. Third, evaluate the impacts of your choices. Fourth, pick the choice that best suits the problem or individual at hand. In the case of Bertha, you would look at her diagnosis and lifestyle after being diagnosed with dementia (facts) and who makes the decisions about Bertha’s health, her or her son. After that has been decided, you need to look at the possible choices you have regarding Bertha and her baby sitting capabilities and evaluate each of the choices. Finally, make the choice that would have the best impact on the situation at hand. On the macroscale of this case study is the neighborhood, Neverland. Neverland has seen a spike of crime recently, which seems to affect all aspects of the community like safety and how school is. Three priorities for helping this community are finding a way to tame crime, find affordable housing for people, and make sure people have enough to eat. The way to convince people about getting behind these issues is putting together a network of people that can supply confidence into the community. For example, people involved with nonprofits that help advocate for better housing and people involved in government incentive programs like SNAP. The way this would be funded would be through money that was either raised or donated. Besides this, there is information that would be needed for the team you are working with to be able to fully help you. The important information they would need is the ages, race, and religious affiliation of the family, the jobs of the parents, any illnesses the family has, the social class of the family,

Lawrence 5 the living situation of the family, the programs the family takes advantage of like social services (day care), and an assessment after the engagement phase of the planned change process. All things considered, the case study that was provided by the teacher makes a great practice of assessing a situation correctly by using the answers to the questions that were provided by the teacher. Each individual in this class would take a different approach to this case. For example, there were some details that were omitted from the case study that a person had to personally think of. Regardless, each interpretation of the case provides an insight into the thought process of that specific individual. It is a good indicator of where a person is at being proficient in the profession of social worker.
