Template for Assignment 5-2 - Historical Context Replace the bracketed text below with your responses: By completing the information below before you respond to the prompt it will make it clear to me what you are writing about and also help you focus on the assignment. General Topic: Climate Change and Environmental issues Specific Topic: Chernobyl Historical Research Question: What long lasting effects has the Chernobyl disaster had on the environment and people over 20 years later Current Event war with Ukraine and Russia and the invasion of Chernobyl by Russia Feb 2022 Describe how exploring your research question improved your understanding of the historical roots (background) of your current event . How did learning more about the subject of your research question (Your Specific Topic) help you identify events from the past that contributed to or led up to your current event: In exploring the research question about Chernobyl, I was able to learn how that is relatable to the current event with Russia and Ukraine this year. Russia and Ukraine have always had political issues and they did in the 1980s and still do today. This nuclear disaster shows political issues, government issues, humane issues, environmental issues as well as nuclear weapon issues. The radiation that was exposed in our environment in the original disaster is still in the atmosphere today and the current war in Ukraine has further exposed the population today Explain how biased perspectives (the lens from which you are viewing your historical question which is about your Specific Topic) influence what is known about both your historical question and current events. You should have read this material from the Module Five Introduction to help you with this question. You can also go the Resources page to learn a lot more about perspectives.
Biased perspectives influence what we know about Chernobyl because we only get the details that those people interviewed for first hand accounts. If those were not told in the correct way or not a representative population of people we are missing narratives. Every source is biased. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing perspective or absent voice. If you go here you can learn what is meant by the phrase “missing perspective and absent voices” If you go here, you will be able to read through several sources that address the issue of missing or absent voices. For the current event, the narrative is simply told via those in Ukraine and Russia and mostly all people in government. I think the narrative would be different if women and children who were greatly affected by the government decisions could tell their stories Propose how the narrative (story) about your historical event might change if it were told from a (missing or absent voice) perspective. ( See the links above) – So if you are writing about the Specific Event – the adoption of fossils fuels - from a particular perspective than you must analyze how the interpretation of that Historical Event might change if the story was written from one of the missing or absent voices such as Women, African-American, Native-American or LGBTIA groups. A lot of the narratives were told via men or people living just within so many miles of the nuclear power plant. If we take an account from more women, more people with cancer, more people living further away we may have different stories. Propose how the narrative about your current event might change if it were told from a missing (absent) perspective. See comment for question just above. Once you understand the concept of a “missing perspective or absent voice”, you will be able to study a current event and identify what voice or perspective is missing. Then, you should be able to determine how the narrative. story about your current event might have been told differently. I think if we heard more stories of the current event from women and their first hand accounts then the perspective would be more people around the globe would be angry with what Russia was doing in
Ukraine with Chernobyl and how the nuclear radiation is affecting those who live there. There is very little first hand account right now of those directly affected living nearby.
