Case study five 1 Andy: Case Study 5 Alexis Ferguson LeTourneau University EXST 4363 11 February 2024
Case study five 2 Andy is a ten-year-old boy in third grade. He got retained in kindergarten for one year based on his immature behavior. After multiple teachers noticed his struggles with organization and attention skills, one teacher, Ms. Gonzalez, referred him to get evaluated for AD/HD. Upon further examination Andy was diagnosed with AD/HD and recommended medicine, his parents declined the option and produced their own plan to help accommodate him, shortly after noticing this was not helping in his development, he now takes Ritalin twice a day with his implemented 504 plan. Would you say that Andy’s behavioral characteristics are considered hyperactive impulsive, inattentive, or a combination of both? Andy’s behavioral characteristics are a combination of both hyperactive impulsive as well as inattentive. What academic difficulties does Andy have that might be attributed to AD/HD? Some of the difficulties that Andy has are struggling to finish work, working carelessly, struggles paying attention, being disorganized, and acting out immaturely. Based on Andys description, does it seem possible that he might also have another disability? If so, which one? Based on Andy’s description, I do not think that he has another disability. I think all his characteristics shown and described align with AD/HD. He struggles with paying attention, organizing, and time management. What specific interview questions could have been asked of Andy’s parents when the pediatrician made the diagnosis of adhd?
Case study five 3 I think a couple of questions that could have been asked to Andy’s parents are if he becomes easily frustrated, does he have difficulty completing tasks, does he struggle to follow direction, does he become impulsive, or does he tend to easily get distracted? What are some instructional procedures that could be used to help Andy with completing and turning in his homework? Direct instruction such as highlighting and repeating words during lessons would help Andy keep focused and hold his attention, reward systems will also encourage Andy to WANT to finish his work. Such as every student who turns in their homework will receive a prize, this will push Andy to want to finish so that he does not feel left out of all the goodness. Do you think Andy might benefit from medication? Why or why not? I think that Andy would benefit from medication because it would help him focus. A lot of Andy’s struggles stem from his lack of attention skills and cause him to fall behind resulting in immature behavior. Medicine would provide Andy with the opportunity to gain experience better simply because his attention skills would improve. What are some uses of technology that may be beneficial to Andy? Technology would be beneficial to Andy because he may like to see the graphics, colors, and develop new skills. The use of technology may help keep his focus and attention because it provides immediate feedback for him to see and gives him something to look forward to working with.
