Advertising reflections through social science perspectives have both positive and negative aspects. Advertisements can influence individuals, groups, cultural identities, and society. However, it is essential to acknowledge the potential for bias, a negative part of advertising. Additionally, advertisements can convey both positive and negative beliefs and values. It is crucial to approach advertising with a critical eye and to consider the potential impact it may have on various audiences. By doing so, we can ensure that advertisements are not perpetuating harmful stereotypes or promoting negative beliefs and values. Instead, we can strive to create ads that are inclusive, informative, and respectful of diverse perspectives. The four advertisements chosen for this project are Pantene #SeeBeautyNotGender, Audi: The Doll That Chose To Drive, Apple: A Climate Change Promise From Apple, and Cannon: Truthmark. In the advertisement, Pantene #SeeBeautyNotGender, a courier, hairdresser, and runway model do their daily jobs while a narrator asks what you see. The narrator asks, Do you only see her gender? The narrator asks the audience to look again, showing them doing their daily routines and tasks, and again, she asks if you see determination, care, and strength. The ad represents LGBT communities, genders, races, and ethnicities. "They just want to be treated as normal. However, the majority of society tends to perceive transgender as 'special' people with 'special' life choices" (n.a.,2018). Pantene is asking to celebrate the beauty of people from all walks of life without gender boundaries. We can then move towards a more inclusive society for every gender. Through this advertisement, Pantene is reaching out to all, every culture, race, community, ethnicity, background, and religion, no matter who you are. Audi: The Doll That Chose To Drive is the next chosen advertisement. This ad opens in a toy store divided by blue and pink. The right side of the toy store is blue and has toys such as cars, trucks, and army men, and the toys are all boys. The left side is pink, has Barbie dolls,
carriages, and makeup vanities, and the toys are girls. One of the Barbie dolls decides when the store closes to go for a ride, and her carriage would not go. She went over to the blue side and jumped in an Audi. She drives around the store until opening. Just as the store opens, she stops in the aisle. She did not make it back to the shelf in time. A young child and his mother come down the aisle, and the child picks up the car. He turns to his mother and asks if he can have it. The mother then takes the Barbie out, puts her back on the pink shelf, and tells her son they do not go together. The son puts Barbie back into the car as his mother walks away. The announcer says, "Because playing like driving should not be stereotyping. Let's change the game this Christmas" (Valdes-Dapena, 2021). The Audi advertisement aims to reach all viewers this holiday season, encouraging them to break free from gender stereotypes and purchase toys without limitations based on gender. This message is timely and essential, promoting inclusivity and equality for all. By challenging traditional gender roles, we can create a more diverse and accepting society. Let us embrace this opportunity to impact and support a more inclusive future positively. Apple: A Climate Change Promise From Apple is the following advertisement. This ad opens with an infant lying on a bed in an open room. The baby lying on the bed represents a new group or generation, a fresh start. A voice in the background, "Apple," "We promise that everything we make from how we make it and even how you use it, will be carbon neutral by your tenth birthday" (n.a.,2020). As a leading industrial and business conglomerate, Apple is setting a new standard for corporate responsibility by committing to a greener future. Through its advertising efforts, Apple is reaching out to the global community to make this promise a reality by prioritizing security and setting a clear deadline for achieving this goal. Therefore, it attracts environmentally conscious consumers who care about the environment, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint. By investing in renewable energy

sources and implementing eco-friendly practices in its manufacturing processes, Apple contributes to a healthier planet and sets an example for other companies. Last, there is Cannon: Truthmark: An advertisement where three photojournalists speak about their work experiences or thoughts about work being stolen and used for other journalist stories. The three photojournalists suggest that the photos taken for an article stay attached to that article with what is called a Truthmark. With Truthmark, anytime you click on the photo, the article that belongs to it will appear alongside it. Journalists must maintain their integrity and credibility by giving credit where it is due. Plagiarism and misrepresentation of work undermine the trust between journalists and their audience and harm the content's original creators. Truthmark's efforts to raise awareness about this issue are commendable, as they can help prevent such unethical practices from becoming commonplace in the media industry. By promoting transparency and accountability, we can ensure that journalism remains a respected profession that serves the public interest. Truthmark aims to promote transparency and accuracy in journalism. By reaching out to fellow journalists, Truthmark is also reaching out to society. The organization believes everyone has a role in promoting truth and combating misinformation. Truthmark hopes to create a culture of valuing truth above all else by educating the public about accurate reporting. How do ethical issues in social sciences affect advertising? Do they perpetuate bias, rely on stereotyping, or support social change? Additionally, what role does politics play in this dynamic? What is the influence of advertising on discrimination and equality within society? This question digs into the complex relationship between advertising and societal values. I used a few social science perspectives to come up with this question. Specifically, I looked into the fields of Sociology and Psychology. By drawing on these disciplines' concepts, views, and approaches, I
could craft a question that explores the impact of advertising on discrimination and equality in a comprehensive and sophisticated manner. This inquiry is of utmost importance today, where advertising significantly shapes our perceptions and attitudes toward various social groups. A deeper understanding of this relationship can help create a more equitable society. The event that inspired my research question is the Bud Light Controversy. Bug Light signed with Dylan Mulvaney, a transgender actor, and social media influencer. Mulvaney posted a video on April 1st, 2023, debuting her partnership with Bud Light. "The post sparked negative commentary among conservative social media personalities, politicians, and celebrities, many of whom used transphobic rhetoric to attack Bud Light for turning to "woke" advertising and playing off of the current political climate, which has seen a significant rise in anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policy introduced in many conservative legislatures. Bud Light's parent company, Anheuser-Busch, was also targeted"(Caruso, 2023). Mulvaney, who has 1.8 million followers, had taken a break from Tik Tok on April 27th after Bud Light lost its spot as the top-selling beer brand, was said to have had a bomb threat at one of the warehouses, and marketing executives put on leave after the backlash. On April 14th, Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth released a statement on the company's website about the importance of accountability and taking responsibility. Later in April, It also stated that it would focus its marketing campaign on music and sports in the future. As an advocate for equality and acceptance of all individuals, regardless of their race, gender identity, orientation, culture, religion, and other factors, I strive to approach advertisements portraying any group with an open mind, free from preconceived notions. However, my values and beliefs may subconsciously influence my analysis of such ads. For instance, I may pay close attention to whether the ad accurately represents the diversity within
the group or community being portrayed or whether it perpetuates harmful stereotypes. It is essential to remain vigilant and objective in evaluating advertisements to ensure that they align with our values of inclusivity and respect for all individuals. By doing so, we can promote a more equitable and just society. Acknowledging that individuals with varying values may perceive my advertisements differently is essential. The content of my ads centered around topics such as transgender rights, gender roles, truth, and environmental protection. Understandably, others may hold differing opinions on these subjects and are entitled to do so. The essence of the matter lies in how they respond to these viewpoints, as it reflects the values and norms of our society. Recognizing and respecting diverse perspectives is crucial while promoting open dialogue and understanding. " The sociological perspective invites us to look at our familiar surroundings in a fresh way. It encourages us to take a new look at the world we have always taken for granted, to examine our social environment with the same curiosity that we might bring to an exotic foreign culture"(Robertson, n.d.). This perspective also helps us understand ourselves better. It examines how individuals act and evolve within social groups while understanding the causes that influence behavior. Social interaction is critical to our society, or how individuals engage with and react to others. Human behavior within social groups explores the underlying causes influencing our actions and evolution. It sheds light on the essential role of social interaction in shaping our society, examining how individuals engage with and react to others. In essence, the sociological perspective provides a powerful tool for comprehending the complex dynamics of our social world. By embracing this perspective, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of human behavior and the forces that shape our society.

Exploring the world through the perspectives of social sciences can profoundly impact one's life. Individuals can better understand the world by searching into the intricacies of human behavior, societal structures, and economic systems. This understanding can lead to personal growth, improved decision-making, and a greater appreciation for the world's complexities. By examining the world through the lens of psychology, individuals can gain insight into their behavior and thought processes and those of others. Sociology provides a framework for understanding the structures and dynamics of society, while economics offers a lens through which to view the systems that govern our daily lives. By incorporating these perspectives into our worldview, we can become more informed and engaged citizens, better equipped to navigate the challenges of the modern world. Taking a social science perspective to examine prevalent issues such as drug addiction, hunger, and poverty in my community can significantly impact my community relations. By looking into the root causes of these issues and analyzing their social implications, I can gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by my community. This knowledge can help me develop more effective solutions and strategies to address these issues, ultimately improving community relations. Gaining a deeper understanding and knowledge of social sciences can significantly enhance one's comprehension of global issues. For instance, understanding the principles of economics can help individuals comprehend the impact of global trade policies on different countries. Similarly, knowledge of political science can aid in learning the complexities of international relations and diplomacy. Moreover, sociology can provide insights into the social and cultural factors that shape global issues such as poverty, inequality, and migration. Therefore, a deeper understanding of social sciences can equip individuals with the necessary tools to tackle
global challenges and contribute to a more just and equitable world. One can approach global challenges and questions more informally by comprehending how social scientists analyze human behavior. When we see social media or TV ads, they can make us think and feel certain things. Sometimes that is good, but sometimes it could be better. We have to be careful because ads can be biased and show us things that are not true. They can also make us believe in good or bad things. Looking at ads critically and considering how they affect different people is essential. We want to ensure that advertisements do not show harmful stereotypes or ideas. Instead, we want ads to be fair, helpful, and show respect for everyone.
