2 Response Post: Impacts of Structural Inequalities Systemic inequities can substantially impact African Americans' development, learning, and educational chances. How systems, institutions, and policies maintain social hierarchies and perpetuate gaps in access to resources, power, and opportunities are referred to as inequalities ( Fabionar, 2020). Therefore, the school-to-prison pipeline and the racial achievement gap will be discussed in this post as examples of structural inequities and African Americans. The school-to-prison process is the phenomenon of youngsters, mainly students of color, being pushed out of school and into the criminal justice system. Systemic racism, poverty, and a lack of resources are all examples of structural inequities that can influence the school-to-prison continuum among African Americans (Monk, 2018). This problem has a disproportionate impact on African American students. They are more likely than their white counterparts to be suspended, expelled, or arrested in school for the same behavior. Compared to white children, African American students are frequently and severely penalized for the same behavior, resulting in a higher percentage of exclusionary discipline. Long-term repercussions of exclusionary discipline include decreased academic achievement, disengagement from school, and involvement in the criminal justice system ( Fabionar, 2020). On standardized tests, African American learners are frequently outperformed by white peers. The disparity continues across all levels of education. The racial achievement gap is exacerbated by structural inequities, including unequal access to high-quality education, insufficient funding for schools in low-income communities, and systemic racism (Monk, 2018). Black American children have a greater likelihood than white children to attend impoverished schools with fewer resources, including experienced teachers and up-to-date
3 literature. As a result, academic attainment suffers, as does preparedness for college and careers ( Fabionar, 2020). Furthermore, African American students may face prejudices and bias from instructors and other students, leading to lower expectations and less academic support. Therefore, structural disparities can substantially impact African Americans' development, learning, and educational chances. Stakeholders may work toward an equitable education system for all learners by analyzing and resolving structural inequities.
