Identify the global societal issue you have chosen to research for your Final Paper, an argumentative essay, and explain why further research on this topic is important. Today, the world continues to grapple with the problem of poverty and inequality, which according to the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commission (OHCHR), significantly erodes economic and social rights. In my final argumentative essay, I will research this topic (OHCHR, n.d). I believe researching this area is crucial because it can aid in a better understanding of the root causes of the problem of poverty and income inequality as well as how the world can reshape its next-generation initiatives for poverty and income inequality reduction. Provide a clear and concise thesis statement that includes a solution to the global societal issue. As nations across the globe embark on reshaping the next generation initiatives for poverty and income inequality reduction, it is imperative to prioritise education and skills development and advocate for the recognition of the right to development and social and economic rights through people-centred development. Explain how this global societal issue impacts a specific population. Poverty and income inequality reduction impacts women and girls worldwide, depriving them of the opportunity to access education, employment, reproductive health & rights, and maternal health, and may significantly increase child marriages in developing nations, gender-based violence (GBV), and gender inequality. Locate a peer-reviewed scholarly source and provide statistical data that you found surprising on the topic.
The most surprising fact is that more than 40% of the world’s population lives in poverty and that the United States has the highest poverty rates in the developed world, despite its collective wealth as a nation ( Beech et al., 2021). These statistics clearly show the pervasive nature of the problem and suggest that having a high level of economic growth or wealth as a nation may not necessarily be sufficient to eliminate poverty. Addressing the issue, therefore, may require a multifaceted approach that considers its root cause and the specific needs of the most affected populations.
