JOURNAL CRITIQUE 2 Journal Critique Part I Holly K. Oxhandler and Kenneth I. Pargament are the authors and the title; Social Work Practitioners’ Integration of Clients’ Religion and Spirituality in Practice. The name of the journal of the article is social worker, whose volume and issue number is 59(3) published in July 2014 pages 271-279. The statement of the problem of this article focuses on how religious and spiritual have worked their ways and integrated them into social work practices (Oxhandler & Pargament, 2014). It also aims at finding out the education and review instruments used to assess these practices. In addition to that, the article focuses on findings from the previous studies in examining social worker integration of clients' religious and spiritual activities are compared with those of other helping professions. Finally, the articles focus on finding the implications for education and practice are discussed. The authors’ purpose was to establish how religious and spiritual activities among different societies were being integrated into social work practices. The authors apply the approach of interrogation which involved; examining practitioners'' of clients in religious and spiritual practice as a whole in learning how they integrated them into a social work. However, the authors' main conclusion is that there is a lot to learn after his session of examining the practitioners. There is to need to empower practitioners to ethically asses the issues related to religious and spiritual practice (Oxhandler & Pargament, 2014). This research emerged to be one of the largest groups of clinically trained helping professionals. Finally, the authors of this article concluded that it is equally essential for
JOURNAL CRITIQUE 3 the social work profession to understand social workers' views and behavior in integrating religious and spiritual activities. Part II 1. Is the title of the article appropriate and clear? The title of the article is appropriate and clear since it communicated the intended area of focus on the research. It is clear on how it summarizes the scope of the research a way that it is easy for the readers to understand and interpret. 2. Is the abstract specific, representative of the article, and in the correct form? The abstract in this article is specific and representative of the article. By going through the abstract, we can understand why social workers were given the priority in this research and how understanding their attitudes helps to answer the research question of this article. Its forms of representation were correctly done, by giving the accounts of the research procedure. 3 . Is the purpose of the article made clear in the introduction ? The purpose of the article though elaborately stated, was not clear in the introduction. The writers failed to elaborate in detail why the research was essential and how social workers were relevant in the research topic of this article. 4. Did you find errors in the interpretation? The interpretation was well articulated in how the authors used subtitles in presenting his work in a simple way for the readers to understand the main concepts in the research. However, the interpretation of integrating religious and spiritual into practice was not sufficiently done to warranty how stress, gratitude, and mindfulness transforms into spiritual transformation.

The authors have cited the pertinent literature showing how other authors' work, contributed to his research. He has acknowledged their effort in his research. i. If the author has included inconsequential references, suggest removing them . The authors have presented his work adequately addressing the issues in the research topic by using correct reference. I have not identified any area where he included inconsequential references. 7. Have any ideas been overemphasized or underemphasized ? The ideas used by the authors in addressing his research topic have been overemphasized, for example, the use of allied profession to explain how religious, spiritual activities have been integrated . i) If so, suggest specific revisions The specific part I recommend to be removed in making this article not to have overemphasized is the removal of use allied profession. I believe that by entirely relying on roles played by social workers is sufficient enough to explain the research topic in this article.
JOURNAL CRITIQUE 5 8. Should some sections of the manuscript be expanded, condensed, or omitted? Some manuscripts in this article should be expanded; although these manuscripts are not published, they provide relevant information as compared to those already published. 9. Are the authors’ statements clear? Some of the authors’ statements are not clear since they do not address the main purpose of the research as established. i) Challenge ambiguous statements “Social work research has not thoroughly assessed other factors, including practitioners’ perceived feasibility and self-efficacy with integrating RS into practice, which may affect social workers’ orientation to this area of practice” ii) Provide examples of how clarity can be achieved Though perceived feasibility and self-efficacy with integrating RS into practiced has not been exhaustively used in this research, there is a connection that they may affect social work orientation in this area of practice. 10. What underlying assumptions do the authors have ? The assumption in this research is that RS is mainly affected by social workers on how they are integrated into other disciplines. Social works and social workers are the basis under which these RS activities are passed from one generation to another.
