2 Week 4 Interactive Activity: Taking Photo A Girl Playing with A Doll The concept of doing gender becomes apparent after observing a young girl playing with a doll and pretending to nurture the doll just as a mother does an infant. Young girls and boys reproduce different gender roles based on their level of socialization. In this photo, the young girl reproduced the feminine gender role of nurturing. Society expects women to take up the nurturing role, which has become a norm in different societies. The young girl pictured has been keen to observe that females take up tending to the babies. Play represents one of how young boys and girls embrace different gender roles. It was interesting to note that the young girl is fully conversant with the feminine gender roles and was doing gender when she began nurturing the doll. A man Checking a Car’s Engine The photo represents a man checking the car engine, a clear example of taking up his masculine role. In many societies, men are likely to check the engine and carry out different car maintenance activities. In this context, doing gender represents reinforcing the masculine role, which is an association between the masculine strength and the technical nature of the activity. Thus, although men constantly pose to check the car engine without a conscious effort to do gender, they reflexively reveal the masculinity in the role. A Woman Serving Tea in the Workplace Social Hall The photo represents a female colleague that volunteered to serve tea at the workplace. The modern workplace has emphasized achieving gender equality, with men and women taking up similar roles. Despite the efforts to challenge traditional gender roles in the workplace, the picture of a woman serving her colleagues tea demonstrates her gender by

3 conforming to one of the highly recognized feminine roles. The picture reveals that it may be impossible to challenge some of the highly reinforced feminine roles.
