2 My meme is an image of a woman with a surprised expression, with the text "When you find out the class you are taking is all about gender studies." This meme is intended to illustrate some people's initial surprise when they realize they are taking a gender studies course. It speaks to the idea that, while gender studies are an important and increasingly recognized field, it is often seen as a "fringe" discipline or not taken seriously (Dzubinski & Diehl, 2018). This meme is intended to draw attention to the importance of gender studies and the need for education and awareness about this important issue. By illustrating the initial surprise that some people may feel upon learning about gender studies, the meme suggests that gender studies are not always seen as a legitimate field of study (Dzubinski & Diehl, 2018). Thus, it is ironic given the ubiquity of gender issues in our society and the importance of understanding these issues to progress in addressing them. The meme also speaks to the idea of "gender essentialism", which is the belief that there are essential differences between men and women and that these differences are essential to who we are. Gender essentialism is a powerful and pervasive influence in our society, and this meme can be seen as a challenge to this notion (Gülgöz et al.,2019). By highlighting the surprise that

Therefore it undermines the idea of gender essentialism and suggests that gender is not fixed and immutable but rather complex and ever-changing. In addition, the meme speaks to the idea of "privilege", which is the idea that certain people have advantages over others (Gülgöz et al.,2019). In this case, the meme implies that some people may be privileged in their lack of knowledge about gender studies and the issues relating to gender and sexuality. By illustrating the surprise that some people may feel upon learning about gender studies, the meme suggests that these people may be unaware of the realities of gender inequality and the need for increased awareness and education on these issues (Dzubinski & Diehl, 2018). My meme is intended to draw attention to the importance of gender studies and the need for increased education and awareness about these issues. By illustrating the initial surprise that some people may feel upon learning about gender studies, the meme challenges the idea of gender essentialism. It suggests that gender is not something that is fixed and immutable. It also speaks to the idea of privilege and suggests that some people may be privileged in their lack of knowledge about gender studies and its issues.
