Literacy Autobiographies Comment Response 1: In the first write-up, my experiences are similar to my colleague's in terms of having a family background that emphasized the value of education and the importance of literacy development. Both of us were exposed to reading from a young age through activities like visiting the library and having bedtime stories read to us by our parents. However, my colleague's experience differs from mine in that they mentioned some people in a video who struggled with reading due to a lack of support, which I didn't say in my response. This highlights the diversity of experiences that can influence literacy development. Learning resources also discuss the influence of socioeconomic status, exposure to a rich language environment, the role of educators, and peer interactions on literacy development. These factors can significantly impact a child's ability to acquire literacy skills. To encompass other foundational skills, the dialogic reading strategy mentioned by my colleague could be extended to include phonological awareness activities. For example, asking students to identify rhyming words or segmenting and blending sounds within the story's context can enhance their phonemic awareness while fostering a love of reading ( Towson, et al., 2017). In addition to dialogic reading, activities like shared writing, where students collaborate with the teacher to compose stories or texts, can engage emergent literacy learners. Furthermore, creating a print- rich environment in the classroom, such as labeling objects and displaying students' work, can promote print awareness and vocabulary development. Response 2: Similar to the colleague's experience in the second write-up, I grew up in a family that prioritized literacy, emphasizing daily reading and providing access to various books. However,
unlike my colleague, I didn't mention involvement in preschool or structured at-home learning opportunities. Apart from family and cultural experiences, other influences on literacy development can include school environments, peer interactions, and community resources such as libraries and literacy programs. Access to technology, exposure to diverse genres, and teacher- student relationships also play significant roles. The colleague's Readers Theater unit is an excellent instructional practice but can be further enhanced by incorporating writing skills. Encouraging students to create their scripts fosters creativity and reinforces their understanding of narrative structure, vocabulary, and syntax. This approach combines reading and writing, strengthening foundational literacy skills. Moreover, to engage emergent literacy learners, activities like interactive storytelling, phonics games, and journaling can be introduced ( Towson, et al., 2017). Interactive storytelling involves students actively participating in the narrative, while phonics games can help develop essential decoding skills. Journaling encourages students to express their thoughts and ideas in written form, promoting both writing and comprehension skills.
