Assignment: Investigating COVID-19 in Your Community Assignment Instructions : For this research assignment, you will conduct research on statistics about COVID-19 in New York City and related communities. Please note that you must live in a community inside of New York City to follow the steps below. If you do not live in New York City, you can use 11235 and Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn as a “default” address to conduct research. This is the neighborhood around Kingsborough Community College. For questions 1, 2, 3, and 4, you will conduct research on COVID-19 statistics within NYC and your specific neighborhood/community in New York City. In questions 5 and 6, you will analyze the data you have gathered while using your own knowledge of your community. To receive full points for this assignment, you must answer each question fully, using the information you have gathered from research as well as the information on human development that we have discussed throughout this entire course. Using information from the data site, sum up what you have learned. How widespread is the COVID-19 virus among your community (in terms of cases1 per 100,000 residents)? How many deaths are there in your community due to COVID-19? How many people have been vaccinated with at least one dose? 5b. In general, do you believe that the residents of your neighborhood are generally doing well or poorly in terms of being at risk of the COVID-19 virus? Suggest some causes and explanations for why people in your neighborhood are doing well or badly in terms of being infected (or not being infected) and/or dying from the COVID-19 virus. Please use both your charts and your own experiences as a member of your community, as well as information from class, to answer this question. 6. Comparing Your Neighborhood to Your Borough and New York City (Worth 20 Points) 6a. Using information from the data site, compare your neighborhood’s COVID-19 statistics to that of New York City. Is your neighborhood doing better or worse than New York City in terms of: (1) cases per 100,000 residents; (2) deaths; and (3) vaccination doses? 6b. Using information from the data site, compare your neighborhood’s COVID-19 statistics to that of your borough. Is your neighborhood doing better or worse than the rest of your borough in terms of: (1) cases per 100,000 residents; (2) deaths; and (3) vaccination doses? 7. Suggest Positive Changes for Your Neighborhood (Worth 20 Points) Please suggest changes that could occur in your neighborhood to support their health and wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic so they are better protected from the virus.
What new structures or programs could support their health? How can current structures or programs (such as schools, colleges, parks, etc.) change to support their growth?
