In your considered view, has the U.S. body politic in recent years been behaving as a good neighbor, both internally among the citizenry and externally with respect to neighbors? The U.S. has been a good neighbor, both internally and externally, and involves subjective interpretations influenced by various perspectives on policies, actions, and relationships with citizens domestically as well as diplomatic relations internationally. Factors such as political polarization within domestic politics or foreign policy decisions can impact this evaluation. Good neighbor is subjective and can vary based on different perspectives. Internally, one might consider factors such as social cohesion, inclusivity, equality before the law, and protection of individual rights when evaluating if the U.S. has behaved well towards its citizenry. Externally with respect to neighbors involves considering diplomatic relations and trade agreements. It's important to consider various aspects such as domestic policies, international relations, diplomatic efforts, humanitarian aid programs, etc., in order to assess whether or not the US has been a good neighbor both domestically and internationally. Drawing on your explorations of ethics throughout the course, what might an ‘ethic of responsibility’ find regarding support for White nationalism among political and security sector actors, both leaders and the rank and file? For example, were any behavioral consequences foreseeable given leader actions and rhetoric?  Ethics with regards to supporting white nationalism among political and security sector actors. This involves examining ethical theories such as consequentialism (considering consequences), deontology (duty-based ethics), virtue ethics, etc., along with understanding potential behavioral consequences resulting from leader actions and rhetoric. An "ethic of responsibility" refers to a moral framework that emphasizes the accountability and consequences of one's actions. In this context, it would involve considering the impact and potential harm caused by supporting White nationalism among political and security sector actors. Support for White nationalism can have significant negative implications on society, including promoting discrimination, division, violence, and undermining social cohesion. An ethic of responsibility would likely find such support morally wrong due to its harmful effects on individuals or groups targeted by white nationalists. Behavioral Consequences: Leader actions endorsing or enabling White nationalism could lead to an increase in hate crimes targeting marginalized communities as well as acts of domestic terrorism. Finally, drawing on your own personal and/or professional experiences or understandings, what ought be done about these matters now, and going forward? Do you believe the national security community can rise to this challenge of renewed American tribalism and confront White nationalism and domestic terrorism effectively?
The matters of White nationalism, domestic terrorism, and renewed American tribalism require a comprehensive approach involving multiple stakeholders. The national security community plays a crucial role in confronting these challenges effectively. Education and Awareness: Promote education about diversity, inclusion, equality, and the dangers of extremist ideologies to counteract white nationalist narratives. Law enforcement efforts: strengthen law enforcement agencies' capabilities to identify potential threats from white nationalists through intelligence gathering and proactive measures. Collaboration with Communities: Foster partnerships between government agencies (including national security) and communities affected by or vulnerable to extremism to build trust-based relationships aimed at prevention efforts. Regarding whether the national security community can rise up to this challenge effectively is subjective, but it has an important role in addressing domestic terrorism linked with White nationalism due to its expertise in threat assessment, intelligence analysis, and coordination among various levels of government. It is essential for concerted efforts across society, including political leaders, intelligence services, law enforcement, and civil society organizations, to confront White nationalism, domestic terrorism, and renewed American tribalism. The effectiveness will depend on collaboration, budgetary support, policy frameworks, strategic planning, focusing on preventive approaches, risk assessments, targeted interventions, supportive legislation, and respectful engagement with diverse communities. It's not without challenges, but collective action offers hope towards mitigating these pressing concerns. Reference Kamali, S. (2022). the conversation.
