Class Readings Summary Privacy and confidentiality of client data is one of the key points I have captured from the class readings this week. According to Groshong & Phillips (2015), confidentiality is one of the principles in clinical social work. It protects the confidentiality of client information through strategies such as disguising any patient material presented, ensuring that clients' identifiable material is not disclosed and finally, limiting the sharing of the data by preventing third parties from discussing the patient. The second point is the importance of building thriving relationships between social workers and clients. Byrne & Kirwan (2019) state that positive relationship-building is crucial for clients and delivering respectful and effective services to social workers. As such, social workers must practice emotional competence, a major challenge in impacting client relationships. Also, institutions must address issues such as staff turnover, burnout, organizational bureaucracy, or structural issues that might challenge creating a successful and healthy social worker-client relationship. Lastly, arranging and prepping for an environment when meeting is important. Even when conducting sessions over telehealth, preparing the physical environment reflects on the professionalism of the social worker, according to (Wayne, nd). It entails testing the angle of the cameras and other elements in your personal space that the client will see during the session. According to (Wayne, n.d), revealing minimal personal information is recommended and, if possible, using a virtual background. Use of multimedia video in assessment This week, we used Ken Hardy's video on The Assaulted Sense of Self. Watching it improved my perspective on the need to use a different approach in social work, especially when dealing with victims of racism. In this multimedia video, Kenneth explains how black Americans have been left with "an assaulted sense of self" from years of humiliation and dehumanization. It offers critical insights into the approach social workers can use when assessing and helping clients who have been affected by racism, especially Black Americans. The video improves the ease and accuracy of identifying issues for clients stemming from racism and how they can address them. Role Playing In the recording of this week, my role was an observer. My role entailed just observing the events and proceedings of the Zoom meetings. As an observer, I was an inactive participant as I was not directly engaging with the other roles. However, I could share my perceptions in the debrief later. I found this role quite refreshing because I could sit back and adopt a different viewpoint than the others. Therefore, I brought new and helpful points during the debrief because I could observe and internalize from a different eye what others in the active roles could not. I was able to remain calm, objective, and impartial according Debrief
During the debrief, I noted differences in each of the roles and viewed the source of the client's problem. The client, in this scenario, is struggling with anxiety centred on the demands of life. However, the anxiety from the demands of life may be derived from gender expectations and/or social class differences. There are many demands on gender and other inequalities linked to differences in social class that other people, on the other hand, do not understand. Key Lessons about Telehealth Playing the role of an observer this week, I learned how important listening is. Without engaging and just listening and observing, I could pick many things that I might have missed if I had engaged in other roles, especially nonverbal communication. As such, it is important to have clear communication guidelines for a successful and effective Telehealth engagement. Even when working with team members, giving each other adequate time to express their opinions and feelings becomes very important. Therefore, being a competent telehealth practitioner going forward will require me to be more patient and practice listening as much as I can to have a more thoughtful and impactful engagement with my client. In addition, protecting the privacy and confidentiality of the client data is critical. Private data must not be shared with unauthorized people nor used for non-intended purposes (Groshong & Phillips, 2015). NASW code of ethics NASW's code of ethics requires us to uphold the profession's values and act ethically. I upheld these during the role play and the debrief in making decisions and interacting with the other members. Social workers are called upon to challenge social injustice, which requires me to accurately assess the problem the client is facing (Barsky, 2021). Anxiety can stem from social injustice subjected to clients, and a social worker needs to identify it. As an observer, I could link the anxiety to injustices and inequalities stemming from social class. I also advised on data privacy and confidentiality to preserve the dignity and worth of the client(Groshong & Phillips, 2015). collecting cultural genogram data During this week, we collected data and helped the client develop her cultural genogram. I learned that large genograms can be challenging, especially for large families. Some families with many members or a male who had multiple wives, like in this case, can have complex relationships. Getting accurate and adequate information about older generations and understanding their relationship can be difficult. Reflections During the Zoom meeting, it occurred to me the many barriers and limitations that Telehealth helps break. Technology plays a very important role in social work because of time and cost elements. During this week's meeting, it occurred to me that it also introduces an element of comfort linked to the convenience that Telehealth introduces. Our client has anxiety issues, and a Zoom meeting
appeared to make her more comfortable. Clients who are uncomfortable meeting a social worker in person greatly benefit from this because Telehealth offers a chance to have a session with their social worker powered by technology without having to meet them. While there are challenges to using Telehealth in social work, it occurred to me how many ways technology can be optimized to improve this field and, more so, improve the outcomes for our clients. This might be helpful, especially to social workers, when establishing thriving relationships, which is crucial for positive outcomes (Byrne & Kirwan, 2019).
