Report
1 Alternative assessment strategies would involve the whole family, for at least the first session, if not the first few. It is a process to see how the family interacts with each other, who opens up or who asks questions. Each person will have different viewpoints as to why they are there, and each viewpoint is important because we will need to address the individual needs of each person and what goals to set. Depending on the situation, you would have to look at it delicately. If you are servicing an individual but are now involving the family, I need to make sure the client does not feel ganged up on but feels supported. If it is a family session, we have to set rules because some will want to talk more and say their side of the story while others shut down. I would need to make sure that everyone is comfortable and understands boundaries and goals. Every family is different, and you don’t want to step on toes by putting your foot down and setting boundaries, but I think that is very important. A social worker could use their own family dynamics and experiences to relate to the family they are working with. If they have family experiences and stories they can share, they are relatable and the family may steer towards the direction of trust and communicate more openly.
