Case Study for Social Justice-Action Let’s take a look at the following real life case study for social analysis that was on the CBC news this morning. Remember: Social analysis is part of how we think/do social justice. It seeks to bring to the surface, the deeper lying issues, questions, and challenges, including misconceptions and prejudgments. It seeks to find out the W5 and How that lie at the center of an injustice, and after careful analysis, it seems to arrive at viable solutions and courses of action. Social justice is not simply coming up with “band-aid” solutions to an issue, because below the band-aid the issue is still there and will resurface at another time. Another way of speaking about Social analysis is called “Root-cause analysis.” When we discover what is at the root of an issue, we can then make appropriate strategies for action that may challenge the status quo. Here is the situation: The number of children coming to school without the benefit of having breakfast in the morning is increasing by a large percentage. Let’s analyze this situation. Questions to ask : 1. What factors may contribute to this increase? 2. What may be the result/outcome of this increase? (what is at stake?) 3. Who is impacted by this situation? 4. What are the responsibilities of the larger society? 5. What might be some possible solutions to dealing with this crisis?—what are the ongoing consequences to stakeholders? Costs? 6. What CST are evident in this situation and in what way?
