Report
Discuss why some students are not behaviorally or academically impacted by poverty, divorce, and/or a dysfunctional family when other students are significantly impacted by these factors. Knowing that poverty, divorce, and/or a dysfunctional family increase a student’s potential for school difficulties, but they do not assure it, how would you change a teacher’s belief that these home situations cause a student’s school difficulties? Why is it important to train all of the instructional, related service, and administrative staff in a school the same data-based, functional assessment/problem-solving process, and how should this training impact the delivery of early intervention services, the number of referrals to the school’s multidisciplinary team, and/or the number of referrals for special education assessment and determination over time? “Sometimes we have students who are impacted by divorce or by loss or by some critical life trauma that’s occurred outside of the school but is impacting them in the school,” (Knoff, M5, 2021). Everyone processes the issues they are faced with differently. No one knows for sure why things affect some in a negative manner while others are unaffected by the same or similar issues. Everyone is affected by family issues. They can be large issues such as divorce, or something as seemingly simple as not getting their preferred breakfast. We may not know what causes difficulties for a student from day to day. Our job as teachers is to provide a consistent, safe, nurturing environment for each of our students, no matter what their background. We cannot control a student’s home life, but we can control the environment that they walk into each day. It is so important that we treat each child with respect and empathy. "A lot of times what happens in schools is we have work groups that are not really collaborating in the way that they should be, and so we get interventions that are implemented, but not in a concerted, intensive way, and so we don't get the outcomes that we want." (Knoff, 2021) It is crucial that all staff members are trained in a data-based, functional assessment/problem- solving process in the same way. Consistency is key to the success of any program. We all need to be on the same page with how to deal with student difficulties. Providing support to all students in a consistent manner should make the process of delivering support services stronger. The sooner interventions are made, the more quickly a behavior can be corrected or modified. This in turn would reduce the need for office referrals because everyone in the building is using the same language and methods for correcting the behaviors. ACE Production (2021, February 22).
