Lagradilla 1 Reflective Journal: Explain your process of interviewing. Were you able to clearly communicate to the person the information that you needed? What were some of the barriers of communication with the people you were interviewing? Were you able to obtain the information that you needed? What strategies did you use to obtain the information needed? This past week, I conducted interviews with three different people to complete my DFC assignment. I asked these people about their medical history and current lifestyle. I interviewed my friend (34 years old), my mother (75 years old), and my stepfather (58 years old) about their medical history and current lifestyle. Every interview was done in-person and via video conference call. Privacy was of the utmost importance during every interview. During this 1:1 interview, patients were able to ask me any questions they had. This 1:1 interview provided patients with a clear line of communication between nurse professional-to-patient. A few communication barriers included environmental distractions, mind-wandering, culture, religious beliefs, and language, among others. These are several issues that can arise when communicating with future patients. For these interviews, I chose people with slightly different backgrounds than my own. There were a few difficulties with communication between the patients and me, one being that English was their second language. Despite this, communication went well. One of my patients was brief with his answers, while another was quite expressive. A few barriers, including English being a second language, prevented one of my patients from communicating successfully. To make sure that I was asking the appropriate questions, I asked in a manner that could allow the patient to answer appropriately and to their best ability. Despite the patient's language barriers, I continued to ask questions that obtained important information and were answered well.
Lagradilla 2 I was able to obtain the information that I needed in my patient interviews. I used a variety of strategies to obtain the information needed, including open-ended questions, follow-up questions, and reflection. Open-ended questions required the patient to fill-in-the-blanks themselves, making it more likely that they will say something they didn't realize they knew. Follow-up questions clarified further that my patient had said. Reflection allowed for moments of pause to check understanding and ensured that all necessary information was obtained.
