EXPLORE POSTMODERNISM AND SOCIAL CONSTRUCTIONISM 2 Explore Postmodernism and Social Constructionism  Explain what you find very clear and compelling in the ideas of postmodernism. o Language and being able to communicate is what helps all individuals to understand the world around them. Each individual is creating their own meaning to their life and what they think they are meant to do in their life time. The therapist is to listen to know the client’s understanding of life and their connections with the world around them. Working with the therapist the client is suppose to find a new meaning to their reality and social construction (Glass, 2019, pg. 225).  Determine the relationship between systems theories and postmodernism. o Systems theory implies that there is only one answer to an individual’s problem and there is only one solution to fix it. Postmodernism implies that a question has more than one answer and multiple solutions to the problem or problems that are presenting within the system. Based on the systems experiences and emotions they are able to determine the best solution or solutions for their situation to create a better homeostasis for their system (Glass, 2019, pg. 66).  Explain how postmodernism and social constructionism inform your work as a marriage and family therapist. o With the use of postmodernism in Marriage and family therapy it us used to create a second order change within the system. It is not the job of the therapist to make assumptions about what the client is trying to share but rather ask and make sure they understand the meaning of the information from the client’s point of view (Glass, 2019, pg. 228). Social constructionism helps the therapist understand the

Postmodernism and social constructionism both show that familial difficulties and mental health can be different for everyone and there is not one way treatment could be admitted to the individual (Glass, 2019, pg. 226)  Explore how postmodernism helps to facilitate conversations related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. o Postmodernism can help with conversations related to diversity, equity and inclusion because it pushed the boundaries on social norms. The therapist is able to understand what the client experiences based on their stories they tell to the therapist. If they are not willing to tell stories for the therapist to have a better understanding it will be harder for the therapist to guide the client to their goals of a healthier homeostasis (Glass, 2019, pg. 230).  Explain how the ideas of postmodernism relate to the recovery model. o The recovery model can be specific in its steps to each individual depending on how they see their recovery. The individual would have designed their own recovery treatment with their therapist to have control over their own recovery. Much like with postmodernism the individuals, have control over their own therapy treatment. Both let the clients be in control of their own treatments and be able to set their own goals (Onken, 2007).  Indicate anything you find confusing in the idea of postmodernism. o One thing that I do find a little confusing is how the therapist would help the client if they show that their wanted treatment plan is not showing any improvements for their recovery. Among the rest of the questions this is the one that I found most difficult.  Identify specific questions or concerns you have regarding the connections between postmodernism and MFT. o For the most part, I do understand postmodernism fairly well and how it connects to marriage and family therapy. I do think continuing on through the course well help solidify my understand of postmodernism and social constructionism.
