Some basics before getting started… While you will be developing your own essay and argument in this assignment, there are a few boundaries by which you are confined, and these include the topic for discussion and theories for application. Just so we are all on the same page, discuss the following questions with your group members. What is the main issue discussed in the news article? Homelessness, housing, how the police force deals with it. How marginalization affects the homeless population. ______________________ Why is this issue considered a “social problem” and not a “personal problem?” It affects so many Canadians it cannot be looked at on a personal level but instead a social one. When many people have the same/similar reasons for being homeless. In the article it is stated that we can’t undermine the affects mental health has on our population. Alongside that this illusion that shelter is available to all doesn’t actually exist and instead the homeless population is met with long unattainable waitlists. B. Write down at least two assumptions and three key words or concepts for each theory. Find a sentence or phrase from the article that either directly or indirectly serves as an example of the theory’s assumptions, key words, or concepts. SOCI 1125, Autumn 2023 C. Developing a thesis statement What is a thesis statement? A strong thesis statement is a one to two sentence statement that goes at the end of your introductory paragraph. The thesis statement provides the reader with the main argument and direction of your essay. Using “I” statements – go ahead! While you may have heard that “I” statements should be avoided in essays, you can use an “I” statement if it helps to clarify your objectives in your thesis statement. If you do choose to use an “I” statement as part of your thesis, avoid passive and weak wording such as “I think” or “I believe”. Similarly, you’ll want to avoid overly confident wording such as “I will prove.” Verbs such as “argue” and “demonstrate” are more academically appropriate. What should I include in my thesis statement? For this specific essay assignment, you are applying two sociological theories to analyze a social problem portrayed in the news article. To this end, your essay should include the following elements: o Name of the two theories you will be applying o Some insight into how the theories will be applied o The social problem o The context and scope of the social problem Based on your responses in Part B, which two theories do you feel most confident about applying? Write a 1 – 2 sentence thesis statement that reveals to the readers your goals for this essay assignment. Keep in mind that after you’ve completed your essay, you will need to revisit this thesis to make sure it fits the contents of your essay. Use the checklist above to make sure all four elements of a thesis are included. Once you’ve written a draft of your thesis, ask your group members or instructor for feedback. Draft thesis statement: The vast numbers regarding Canadian homelessness are huge, yet Canadians still fail to recognize the problem until they themselves fall close to homelessness themselves. How is it that we remain complacent while our citizens struggle? Symbolic interaction theory alongside Are you using two theories for a more comprehensive perspective?
