Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A.
Summarize: Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember two things. First, the focus of this summary is theological and not narrative. In other words, your summary should highlight what this passage communicates about who God is and what God is doing. Second, words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application
words and not interpretation words. Thus, they should not be used in your answer for this question. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is the application or how we will respond to God’s Word.
Throughout this text, the author portrays God’s will to save as many humans as possible by showing them the way back to him through Paul. Humans strayed due to sin, and God wanted to save the people of Ephesus, so he chose to perform the miracle of healing the sick through Paul. God blessed Paul's handkerchiefs and aprons so that Paul could take these items and place them on the sick. When Paul visited the sick and placed these items on them, they would be healed, and the evil spirits would leave them. Paul was able to spread the miracle of Jesus Christ and spread the word of the Lord. At one point, word was spreading, and some Jewish exorcists heard

what Paul was doing. The Jewish exorcists wanted to do the same and tried to rid someone of the
evil spirits. When they did this, the evil spirit spoke to them and said, “I recognize Jesus, and I know about Paul, but who are you?” (MacArthur, J. (1996) At this time, the evil spirit overpowered the Jewish exorcists and caused them to flee “out of that house naked and wounded.” (MacArthur, J. (1996) Once this happened, the word of the lord spread like wildfire through Ephesus and brought many people together. Some people who came practiced magic; they brought their books and burned them together in front of the people of Ephesus. God wanted to show the people of Ephesus that the power of their faith can perform miracles, and by working through Paul, he tried to save the people of Ephesus from their sins.
B.
Identify: Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. What is the one thing the whole thing is saying? You should be able to express this principle in 1-
3 sentences. As with the previous answer, this principle should be theological and rooted in who God is and/or what God is doing. Please remember that words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words.
“So the word of the Lord was growing mightily and prevailing.” (MacArthur, J. (1996) As God performed miracles through Paul, he showed the people of Ephesus that having faith and trust in him was more substantial than their sin so they could be saved.
C.
Check: Consult at least one scholarly resource to offer support for the theological principle that you believe the passage is teaching. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words), quote, properly cite, and interact with this scholarly resource to demonstrate that it

supports your theological and interpretive conclusion. You must consult the “Commentaries” and the “Bible Dictionaries & Handbooks” tab found on the research guide provided by the Jerry Falwell Library to access the approved academic and scholarly resources. These resources are the only approved resources. Using unapproved resources may result in a score of “0” for this assignment. “He saves from sin all those who come to him through Jesus Christ; he adopts as his own all those who come to him; and he becomes, upon adoption, father to his own.” (MacArthur, J. (2005) pg. 26) This shows truth to the principle in Acts 19: 11-22, where God performs these miracles to help guide the people back to him so they can be saved. Sin was cast upon all humans, and because of this, God has had to set out on a journey over thousands of years to try and save as many humans as he can. God’s miracles are shown throughout the Old and New Testaments of the Bible; he continuously shows us that he has set out to try and rescue us. “And because our glorious God is so worthy of our total consecration, all the saved should live in such a manner as to demonstrate our adoring love to God” (MacArthur, J. (2005) pg. 38). Doing this will help to lead more strayed humans back home to God. As shown in Acts 19: 11-22, the word of the Lord can spread quickly, and some people must be shown the miracles God can make to return home to him. God knew this, so he set out through Paul during this time.
