Q and A on Joshua and Judges
1.
In the video on Joshua, who is it they say is doing battle against the Canaanites? What part is Israel to have in the battle for the Promised Land?
In the Joshua film, God is engaged in a battle against the Canaanites. It is the responsibility of the Israelites to provide support and oversee the war for the Promised Land.
2.
In the Joshua video, 3 points are made in answer to the question, "Why does God declare war?" What are those 3 points?
The initial topic highlighted in the Joshua film was the significant moral corruption of the Canaanites,
particularly in the areas of sexuality and child sacrifices. Another key aspect is that God did not intend to entirely eradicate or commit genocide against the Canaanites. If the Canaanites were to turn to the God of Israel, he would permit it. This highlights the distinctiveness of these stories within the historical context of Israel. Israel, like all other countries, was a country that God desired to establish peace with.
3.
How does the video explain the statements in Joshua about "all of the Canaanites" being slaughtered? Was it really a Genocide?
The expressions "totally destroy," "no survivors," and "all that breathed" are hyperbolic in nature and should not be interpreted literally. Joshua successfully integrated this into other ancient combat records by incorporating metaphorical language into the narrative style.
4.
According to the Judges video, what is the main point of that book?
The primary focus of the book of Judges is to illustrate the downfall of Israel.
5.
Why did God tell the Israelites to drive out the Canaanites from the land? According to the videos, God instructed the Israelites to remove the Canaanites from the land in order to eliminate practices such as child sacrifices and other wicked rituals associated with their religious beliefs.
6.
According to the video, if the leaders and people are so corrupt at this time, why does God's Spirit fall upon the leaders and why does He use them for His purposes?
God's Spirit descends upon the leaders as a means to redeem his people despite their sins, aiming to
lead them in his ways.
7.
In the final chapters of Judges, the statement is repeated several times, "In those days Israel had no king and everyone did what was right in their own eyes". What hint of hope is there for the future in that phrase?
In the absence of a king in Israel, God's favor will bring forth a King to deliver His people. In the future, he is poised to provide them with a type of leadership that will guide them in the correct direction.
