Module 3: Week 3
Thread: Questions About The Bible
Squares, Triangles, Circles, and Hearts
Squares: 4 ideas that, in general, square (fit) with your thinking:
- “God takes the initiative and makes the first move as he pursues people who have rejected him, in order to rescue, redeem, and restore them to a relationship with him.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 38) God is always working in the background to help lead you back to him. I found this to be
accurate as I looked back on my life. God placed certain people in my life at particular times who helped lead me back to him. - “If men were involved in authoring Scripture, why would there not be errors in it? This question acknowledges that human beings are error-prone, and any involvement by them would certainly allow for errors.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 49) This phrase confirms that humans make errors; we know we do. Sometimes, my thoughts still stray; I see all of the different versions of the Bible and wonder how they could all possibly say or share the same things. It still
often leads me to question how much of what I am reading came from the original Bible that was
later translated. The phrase “lost in translation” often sits in the back of my head as I wonder what has been changed. - “We simply need to be content with the Word he has already provided.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 50) Humans always seem to want more. God has already shared his story with us; as long as we have returned to him, we should be content. Accepting God in your life creates a wholeness that you cannot fill with anything else.
BIBL 104
- “Rarely do people consider how elements of their life have shaped what they have become and how these experiences may affect their understanding of Scripture.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 66) Reviewing your life and figuring out how you got to where you are takes a lot of self-
reflection. Your life circumstances and your mindset can affect your interpretation of Scripture. This shows that as you age, you will interpret things differently than before.
Triangles: 3 angles you have never considered before:
- “In actuality, the human race had been looking for a savior since the time of Genesis.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 37) I never considered that we have needed a savior since the beginning of time. - “Writing in your Bible and interacting with the text is a great way for God’s Word to leave an impression on you.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 65) This phrase jumped out because I am a hands-on learner, and annotating through the Bible is not something I had thought of before. This
is something that I will, however, start doing.
- “Church baggage can also develop from a poor church experience.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 68) A lot of my understanding of Churches was that they all had to be good because they were churches. However, after reading this, it solidifies my feelings about growing up in the church that I did. I found church incredibly dull, a waste of time, and not something I could connect with. As I grew older, I became further away from the church and God. It was not until I was pregnant with my first child that I met the two people who would help me on my journey back to
Christ. That was eight years ago. While I am still on this journey of finding the “right” church for
me, I will work to let go of my “church baggage.”
Circles: 2 questions that are circling in your mind:
BIBL 104
- “A law was established prohibiting the translation of the Bible into English.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 56) I’m having a hard time understanding this. If the people believed in God, why would they prohibit the translation of the Bible so that it could reach more people? - “When a person is studying the Bible using a formal equivalence translation, he can have confidence not only in how the passage is arranged but also in the words that are used in the passage.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 62) This, to me, is stating that if we stick to the formal translations of the Bible, then we will have a better understanding of it. This makes me question why we have so many different versions if the original was the better.
Hearts: 1 idea that you loved.:
- “Redemption is not a “do it yourself” project. The kind of redemption that God has in mind is one that only he can accomplish.” (
Everyday Bible Study
pg. 44) I love this because it reiterates that there is no “quick fix” or DIY video you can watch to fix yourself. Redemption will come from God and the life we choose to live through him.
