Michelle Davis Smith REL 1311 01/24/2024 Exodus Discussion Week 3 The text discusses the concept of typology, a visual prophecy that uses symbols to predict and reveal God's will. It is seen in the Old Testament as a model or illustration of something similar but more significant that God will do in the future. The Old Testament types of function through individuals, locations, institutions, or events that point to Christ, His Church, and the paradise restored in the New Kingdom of God. Theocracy is used in the Bible to denote that Israel was under the direct government of God himself. All the people were servants of God, who ruled over their public and private affairs, communicating His will through the medium of the prophets. In the Old Testament, all organs of government were without independent power and had to announce and execute the will of God as declared by priest and prophets, like in the case of Moses. God used a theocracy in the Old Testament to establish clear rules for His people to follow if they decided to be part of His Kingdom on earth. By bringing the Ten Commandments and establishing what Israel could or could not do, God wanted Israel to know that even though He wanted them as part of the Kingdom, they needed to contribute as well, choosing God as the only God and living a life that belonged to God's kingdom. One reason theocracy is not shown in the same way in the New Testament is because God realized that evil was part of human nature and that the power of the state was corrupting the Church. Therefore, it is not a good idea for a government to have any type of theocracy.
In conclusion, the text emphasizes the importance of understanding and implementing typology in government, particularly in the context of religion and faith.
